Yoga in a hot room. What is hot yoga? Everything a beginner needs to know. Who is hot yoga for?

It appeared thanks to the master Bikram Chowdhury.

Bikram Chowdhury

At the age of thirteen in 1957, Bikram Chowdhury was proclaimed India's National Champion of Yoga Achievement. But a few years later he seriously injured his knee joint. According to doctors, the master had a risk of remaining disabled for the rest of his life. And then he was only 17 years old.

Bikram decided to fight the effects of the injury by doing certain asanas under the guidance of Bishnu Ghosh. A set of exercises was aimed at restoring work knee joint. Home hallmark such classes was that the room intended for exercises was preliminarily very heated. This approach was necessary to obtain maximum efficiency in working out the knee and to eliminate the risk of possible damage to the joint. As a result, Bikram managed to restore the functions of the damaged part of the body.

Based on personal success, the master concluded that Hatha yoga exercises performed in warm climates give good results. But not everyone has access to a trip to hot India or another country with a favorable climate. You can recreate the same conditions artificially in any suitable room.

Regular practice leads to improvement training process. Thus, the master made available to everyone a new direction of yoga, world-famous called Bikram Yoga.

What it is?

An important difference between this direction and others is the observance of a certain temperature regime in the room. The air during the entire lesson should warm up to +40 degrees Celsius with a humidity of no more than 80 percent. Thus, the effect of a sauna is created: the muscles warm up faster, and the stretching becomes uniform. All this is accompanied by profuse sweating and, as a result, leads to the cleansing of the body from accumulated toxins. It becomes easier for the body to prepare for heavy loads and complex movements. This will be especially useful for those who suffer from disorders in the musculoskeletal system. It is important to consider that such people are strongly advised to first consult with their doctor and an experienced yoga instructor. For healthy people, this direction has no contraindications, regardless of the age of the student. Special physical preparation for the body is not required.

For classes, it is better to choose morning or evening hours.

Effect on the body

Regular practice of Bikram Yoga has a positive effect on the respiratory, endocrine and nervous systems. During exercise, sweating increases, which leads to the disposal of toxins and harmful substances in the body. A person can quickly lose weight and reduce cellulite.

Daily exercises help strengthen immunity, normalize blood circulation and bring all organs abdominal cavity in tone. The body becomes more flexible and strong. Hormonal balance returns to normal. Bikram yoga technique helps to fight flat feet, including in children.

Performing a certain set of asanas, a person can get rid of the consequences of old injuries. The spine is strengthened, tendons and ligaments become stronger. Back pain goes away, excess weight is dropped. A warm body perceives physical activity more easily, so stretching becomes easier and safer.

This direction of yoga is suitable for almost all people, including children and the elderly. But there are a number of contraindications. Before training, it is better to consult a doctor and instructor, warning about your health condition and past injuries. An experienced mentor will select a convenient set of exercises and provide assistance if necessary.

Contraindications

In connection with the creation of a hot microclimate in the room during the training process, it is necessary to take into account the following requirements to the student's health.

Cannot be practiced when:

  • chronic forms of cardiovascular diseases;
  • severe forms of asthma;
  • diabetes in the acute stage.

You should temporarily limit training when:

  • pregnancy;
  • female gynecological inflammation and menstruation;
  • colds.

  • Meals should be an hour and a half before class;
  • To prevent dehydration, you need to drink one and a half liters of liquid (pure water) during the day.
  • You should be attentive to the needs and characteristics of your body. The load must be adjusted to suit you. Strength training is not for everyone. You need to master the poses gradually, without trying to do everything at once.
  • It is especially difficult for beginners. With experience, the body adapts to regular exercise and is less tired. Gradually, a person enters a training rhythm that is convenient for him.

Home activities

When a lesson is held without leaving home, then before starting you need to properly ventilate the room. Excess moisture will go away, which will reduce the formation of harmful bacteria and mold in the room.

If climatic conditions allow and it is warm enough outside, then you can practice Bikram yoga outside the apartment. It is especially useful to train on a summer day after a rain. At this time, there is an increased evaporation of water from the surface of the earth, and the air is gradually heated by the sun.

never too bad, and never too sick
to do this yoga and start from scratch again.

Bikram Chowdhury

Bikram yoga or "hot yoga" - a set of exercises performed in a heated, humid room.

A bit of history
This type of yoga got its name in honor of its founder, Indian Bikram Choudhury. Starting yoga at the age of four with India's most famous master at that time, Bishnu Ghosh, the younger brother of Paramahansa Yoganand, the author of the most popular book on yoga, in 1957 Bikram became India's national yoga champion at the age of only thirteen. At seventeen, a knee injury during weightlifting brought a prediction from leading European doctors that he would never walk. Not accepting their opinion, he returned to the Bishnu Ghosh school, knowing that if anyone could help heal his knee, it was only his teacher.

Ghosh was a famous athlete and was the first to scientifically prove the ability of yoga to cure chronic physical ailments and heal the body. Under the guidance of his teacher, Bikram began to experience a sequence of asanas to restore the body after an injury. A set of exercises to restore health was performed in a heated room. This significantly reduced the risk of additional injury and helped to deeply work out the area of injury. As a result of hard practice, Bikram completely restored his knee.

According to Bikram Chowdhury, hatha yoga is most effective in the hot Indian climate, and not in room temperature in northern countries. Therefore, he proposed to artificially create hot climate in the premises. Bikram finalized and improved his unique sequence of exercises, which after some time became known as Bikram Yoga.

First appearing in the States almost 50 years ago, Bikram yoga has rapidly gained popularity. The number of her fans is constantly growing, and their list is regularly updated with well-known names. Today, this type of yoga is preferred by David Beckham, Lady Gaga, Ashton Kutcher, Robbie Williams, Madonna, George Clooney, Jennifer Aniston and others.

What is an occupation?
Bikram Yoga - A 90-minute program to improve overall health through balancing and strengthening each individual system in the body with a scientifically proven effect; prevents disease, helps recover from injury, promotes detoxification and weight loss, and limits the effects of aging.

Bikram yoga is especially popular due to the absence of groups and levels and the availability of exercises for any age and any physical form. The Bikram yoga class includes a fixed sequence of 26 hatha yoga exercises and 2 breathing exercises, which are performed in a heated room (38–40 ° C) at high humidity (40–50%) for 1.5 hours.

Bikram yoga exercises are aimed at working out each part of the body in a certain order; each posture prepares the body for the next. The intensity of the exercise maintains a high heart rate, stimulates metabolism and starts the process of losing weight, as with a full-fledged cardio workout. An increased, but not excessive, load on the circulatory system strengthens the vessels and the heart, which leads to pressure stabilization and restores the tone of the vessels. The high temperature helps to relax the joints and improve the elasticity of the muscles for deeper and safer stretching of the body. Humidity causes intense sweating, stimulating detoxification processes. Thus, this type of exercise works on the whole body as a whole, improving the cardiovascular, circulatory, respiratory, musculoskeletal, endocrine, immune and other systems of our body.

How to dress and prepare for class?
Drink plenty of water throughout the day and you will be well prepared before coming to class. Proper hydration supports the healthy functioning of your body systems and allows heat to strengthen you rather than overwhelm you.

Don't eat anything heavy 3 hours before your yoga class.

Dress in light and comfortable clothes for class, as if you were going to the beach.

In addition to the usual yoga mat, you only need three things: water (it can be difficult to maintain a high pace without additional liquid) and towels (one for the mat, the other for the shower). Since the increased temperature and humidity leads to increased sweating, both a towel and a shower will come in handy.

How to behave in class?
It is important for beginners to remember that the most difficult thing in the first lesson is to stay indoors throughout the class. It is normal to feel dizzy, nauseous in the first session - these sensations are temporary and will subside as your body detoxifies and acclimates. No one will require you to perform all the asanas without fail. Work your best, but listen to your body. If the load turns out to be excessive, you can always take a break, drink water, pause and just sit on the mat, continuing the activity to the best of your ability.

What to expect from classes?
The Bikram yoga class is 90 minutes of active meditation, where we learn to achieve harmony of the body, mind and soul, get rid of depression, stress and fatigue. This is not just sitting on the floor, but a really hard and effective workout.

In the classroom, an unusual experience awaits you, and the sensations after each class are unchanged: lightness, renewal, a surge of energy and inexhaustible inspiration!

Your progress in practice will depend on how regularly you practice, how carefully you listen to the signals of your body and follow the instructions of the teacher. As a reward for these efforts, you will be able to enjoy a whole range of pleasant bonuses from an accomplished feat that will motivate you to continue practicing and develop in your practice, noticing positive changes inside and around you.

Yoga is a lifestyle for active people. As one sage from India said: “Each of us has a whole life to practice yoga.” For strong-willed experimenters, HOT YOGA is the best way to be healthy and stay young.

Bikram yoga - what is it

Bikram yoga, or as it is called in another way hot yoga, is a set of certain asanas that are performed in a warm, warm room. This type of yoga got its name thanks to its founder Bikram Chowdhury.

Initially, this yoga was used by Bikram as a recovery from an injury. He did the exercises in a heated room. After a full recovery, the master improved the exercises by offering to practice in rooms with a hot climate.

Hot yoga beginner class includes:

  • 26 consecutive Hatha yoga exercises.

They are performed indoors at a temperature of 38-40C and a humidity of 40-50%. The duration of the lesson is 1.5 hours.

HOT YOGA - 10 basic rules

Stop and Concentrate Before You Begin

  1. The last meal should be at least 3 hours before class. Well, if it’s completely unbearable, then it’s allowed to have a snack with something light - an apple or a salted cracker;
  2. Drink less water. A full belly will interfere with doing abdominal exercises;
  3. Dress for training, a minimum of clothes. Sports swimsuits, cropped T-shirts complete with shorts or short leggings are ideal;
  4. If you are just starting to practice this type of yoga, stand at the end of the hall in order to have a good view of those standing in front. Since the teacher conducts the class with a dialogue method, and does not show poses, at first you will have to perform the exercises, looking at those who are in the forefront;
  5. Stop and concentrate before you start. When meditating, excessive fussiness is not needed, since it can disturb the meditative state;
  6. Keep quite. Getting into a meditative state is part of the lesson. When concentrating on postures, chaotic thoughts disappear, the process of immersion in a trance begins;
  7. Breathe through your nose. If you breathe through your mouth, then the brain overflowing with oxygen will begin violent activity, bringing the whole body into an excited state. Breathe slowly, quietly - this will activate the part nervous system responsible for relaxation;
  8. Sweat for health. In hot yoga, sweating is inevitable, let the sweat drip off on its own. By wiping it, you encourage the body to release moisture even more;
  9. Listen to the capabilities of your body. Do not try to stretch and strain to the maximum, in a humid, heated room, the body is softer, and excessive overexertion can lead to injury. As you dive in, listen to what your body is saying;
  10. Be sure to dedicate 5 minutes to the final pose. Shavasana (corpse pose) - the final pose, which calms, cools down, evens out breathing.

Who can't practice

  • hypertension;
  • tachycardia;
  • in the presence of problems with the valves of the heart;
  • heart defect.

You should also refrain from such activities:

  • with varicose veins;
  • with difficult outflow of venous blood from the brain;
  • with gynecological diseases;
  • at elevated temperature;
  • with sinusitis;
  • with a cold;
  • during menstruation.

When deciding to practice hot yoga, you should remember that humid air contributes to asthma. In addition, during the asana, it is common to drink and sweat a lot, this process increases the load on the kidneys. Also, warming up increases swelling.

Now you know what HOT YOGA is. Only you can make a choice in favor of such activities. Being healthy, slim and calm is not so hard.

Bikram yoga, better known as hot yoga, came to us, as well as the traditional version, from India. It got its name in honor of its inventor, Bikram Chowdhury, a man who practiced yoga almost from the cradle. Due to a serious injury once received, he had to leave his hobby and spend many years recovering. After unsuccessful attempts to regain his lost health, Bikram suddenly discovered that exercises performed in a highly heated room significantly accelerate the achievement of the desired effect.

Today, Bikram Yoga has gained wide popularity not only in America and Europe, but also in our country. The peculiarity of such training is that all exercises are performed in a room heated to 40 degrees, which is why hot yoga has a number of contraindications.

Benefit

  1. Hot yoga, like traditional yoga, provokes active burning of calories, which continues for some time after the end of classes, and in the case of Bikram yoga, things are even better - due to high temperatures, the process of losing weight is even faster. Thus, hot yoga is excellent, and most importantly fast way lose excess weight for short time get rid of cellulite and get your body in good shape.
  2. Due to the high temperatures in the room, you sweat profusely, which means that along with sweat, unnecessary toxins and waste products exit the body through the skin.
  3. The body, due to a long stay in a very hot room, becomes more flexible, which means that stretching exercises will be more painless for you.
  4. Hot yoga has a good effect on the heart, helping to strengthen the cardiovascular system and respiratory system.
  5. This type of yoga is best for quick recovery of injuries of varying severity.
  6. Bikram yoga helps to relax after a hard day and put your nervous system in order.

Harm

  1. The first and, perhaps, the main disadvantage of hot yoga is that it can be practiced only by absolutely healthy people, which, alas, are very few in big cities. Contraindications include even the presence of such a seemingly insignificant disease as vascular dystonia. If you react poorly to temperature changes, Bikram yoga is an unattainable pleasure for you, because classes in this mode can cause severe dizziness or even fainting in people with weak blood vessels. The same goes for people with heart disease.
  2. It is forbidden to practice hot yoga if you have varicose veins, as stress on the vessels will only aggravate their condition.
  3. When we are stuffy and hot, we are thirsty. This is a natural process. In the conditions of Bikram Yoga, there is profuse sweating and, of course, you want to drink twice as much. And this means that the load on the kidneys increases.
  4. Yoga should not be practiced in the morning, because after training the body is simply not able to quickly recover and return to its usual rhythm.

Many famous athletes, actors, musicians and others, purposeful and successful people, including politicians, include Bikram yoga in their physical training program.

George Clooney once confessed his love for yoga and remarked that "yoga is suitable look activity for a person who enters the second, and even the third stage of his life.

Canadian actress Nina Dobrev, star of The Vampire Diaries, regularly practices Bikram yoga: “I love to try different types fitness, but I do not cheat on Bikram yoga. I work out 2-3 times a week. I love yoga because it calms the body and spirit."
