Coconut oil, its beneficial properties and application for various needs, is rightfully recognized all over the world. Also, the oil is used for problems with the kidneys, heart, high blood pressure, diabetes, HIV, cancer, helps to increase the strength of bones and teeth. All useful properties are due to the presence in its composition of lauric, capric, caprylic acids, which have an antimicrobial, antioxidant, antifungal, antibacterial and soothing effect.

Coconut oil is widely distributed in tropical countries, especially in India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, the Philippines, which have their own production of this most valuable product. Recently, the popularity of oil in the world is growing from year to year. In the last century, oil was considered harmful to human body due to the high content of saturated fats, however, later studies have completely refuted this assumption.

Composition of coconut oil

The most important substance that makes up coconut oil is lauric acid, which in the human body is converted into monolaurin, which, in turn, helps fight viruses and bacteria that cause diseases such as herpes, influenza, cytomegalovirus, and even HIV. As a result of these properties, the oil has been widely used in traditional Indian medicine.

Let's take a closer look at the composition of coconut oil.

More than ninety percent of the oil is made up of saturated fats, which have long been questioned for their usefulness, with traces of several unsaturated fatty acids (monounsaturated fatty acids and polyunsaturated fatty acids).

Saturated fatty acids are mostly medium chain triglycerides that are assimilated in body systems. Lauric acid takes up about forty percent of their total. It also contains capric, caprylic, myristic and palmitic acids.

Polyunsaturated fatty acids are represented by linoleic acid.

Monounsaturated fatty acids are represented by oleic acid.

Coconut oil contains gallic acid, which is also known as phenolic acid. Polyphenols are responsible for the aroma and flavor of butter. The largest amount of polyphenols is found in the oil marked "virgin".

The oil also contains some fatty acid derivatives such as betaines, ethanolamides, fatty ester ethoxylates, polysorbates, monoglycerides, ester polyols.

In coconut oil, you can find a certain amount of vitamins and minerals (vitamins E and K, iron and others).

Coconut oil is one of the best natural nutrients for your hair. It helps accelerate growth and gives hair amazing shine while strengthening it from root to tip.

To get rid of dandruff permanently, massage your scalp with coconut oil.

Help with heart disease

A common misconception among people is that coconut oil is bad for the cardiovascular system. A similar misconception comes from the fact that the composition of the oil includes a large amount of saturated fat. In fact, this oil is good for heart health, which is confirmed by numerous scientific research. It contains about 50% lauric acid, which has a beneficial effect on blood cholesterol levels and normalizes blood pressure. The saturated fats present in the oil are not harmful, unlike the fats found in other vegetable oils.

Skin care

Coconut oil acts as an effective moisturizer for all skin types, including dry skin. The benefits of oil exposure on the skin can be compared to the benefits of any mineral oil. Fortunately, unlike mineral oil, coconut oil does not have adverse effects on our skin. side effects. That is why it is a safe solution to prevent dry and flaky skin.

Coconut oil is able to curb the appearance of wrinkles and sagging skin, which usually accompany the natural aging process. Coconut oil also helps in the treatment of various skin diseases, including psoriasis, dermatitis, eczema, and skin infections. For this reason, oil is quite often the base ingredient in body care products such as soaps, lotions, and creams. The antioxidant properties of coconut oil help to avoid the signs of natural aging and degenerative diseases.

Help in losing excess weight

Coconut oil, its beneficial properties, are recognized as one of the most effective products in the fight against excess fat. Unlike the same Garcinia Cambogia, these properties of the oil are not questioned.

The fatty acids found in coconut oil help in weight loss. When consumed regularly, the oil helps increase the body's metabolic rate, reducing the workload on the pancreas, thereby burning more calories and helping to manage excess weight.

This conclusion is primarily based on the fact that people living in tropical coastal areas and using this oil daily for cooking do not suffer from excess weight and obesity.

Immune System Support

Coconut oil, beneficial properties for supporting the immune system, is due to the presence of antimicrobial lipids, lauric, capric and caprylic acids in it. They have antifungal, antibacterial and antiviral properties, strengthen the immune system. The human body converts lauric acid into monolaurin, which effectively fights viruses, bacteria that cause a variety of diseases (herpes, influenza, cytomegalovirus, HIV).

Normalization of digestive functions

Prevention and treatment of candidiasis

Coconut oil is recommended by experts to prevent and even treat candidiasis. It provides relief from inflammation caused by candidiasis. Its high moisture retention capacity protects the skin from cracking or flaking. In addition, unlike other pharmaceutical treatments for candidiasis, improvement occurs gradually, which allows the patient to get used to the withdrawal syndrome. In the treatment of candidiasis, the intake of this oil is started with small amounts, which are then gradually increased.

Candidiasis is a disease that is caused by the uncontrolled growth of yeast of the same name in the human stomach. Usually this type of fungus is present in the body of each of us, but its growth is controlled by beneficial bacteria. The use of antibiotics, the development of other destructive bacteria, and other factors can lead to an imbalance of bacteria in the stomach, resulting in candidiasis. Also, a similar disease can be caused by ingestion in our stomach chemical substances from washing powders, bleaches, medicines.

Symptoms of candidiasis are manifested in the form of infections of the genital organs, urinary tract, bladder, stomach, intestines, ears, nose, throat. Also, the disease manifests itself in the form of dryness and itching of the skin, inflammation during internal organs, disorders digestive system and problems with hair and nails.

Scientists attribute the spread of this disease in Europe and America to the cold, humid climate and the peculiarities of cooking, storing and eating food. In these areas, most of the food is processed with fermented yeast. For example, these crops are often used in the manufacture of foods such as bread, cheeses, baked goods, alcoholic beverages and their use can contribute to the development of candidiasis. The fatty acids found in coconut oil can neutralize the harmful effects of yeast and are used to treat candidiasis.

Caprylic, caproic, myristic and lauric acids, which are part of coconut oil, have antimicrobial and antifungal properties, helping to eliminate candida. Monolaurin, formed when lauric acid enters the human body, is a powerful tool for fighting fungus.

Tissue healing and treatment of infections

When coconut oil is applied to damaged areas of the skin, it forms a protective layer that helps protect the integument from dust, polluted air, fungi, bacteria and viruses. The oil accelerates the healing process of damaged tissues and effectively eliminates bruises.

The antifungal, antiviral, and antibacterial effects of coconut oil make it an effective remedy against various infections. Based on some data, we can say that the oil kills viruses that cause influenza, measles, hepatitis, herpes, SARS and other serious diseases. Coconut oil has long ceased to be a novelty or something unusual. Many women have fallen in love with coconut oil masks, pampering their face and body with beneficial trace elements that it contains in abundance.

But, unfortunately, there is not enough information on the Russian-language Internet about how to choose good quality coconut oil .

Which coconut oil from Thailand is better: refined or unrefined?
Which oil is edible, and which is better to use for hair and body care?
And what is the use of this oil? Why does it lower cholesterol?
Can you lose weight with it? What is the best dosage to use it?

I will answer these and many other questions in a series of articles about coconut oil. In this article, we will look at choosing Thai unrefined coconut oil: what it is and how to choose the best coconut oil.

The benefit part of the article was a literal Russian translation of a brochure from one of our suppliers. This article caused a storm of questions and conflicting comments. Many clarifying questions were also collected from customers who, before buying coconut oil from Thailand, want to know more about its features and properties.

Since writing the first article about coconut oil, I have learned a lot of interesting and useful things, as well as on personal experience repeatedly convinced that coconut oil is useful and effective for solving a variety of problems.

I already wrote about how to distinguish natural coke oil from synthetic and much more in a previous article. Here I will cover topics not covered in it.

This article was written using posts from popular health blogs in Thailand, as well as an article from the journal of the Faculty of Pharmacy, Mahidol Research University.

Types of coconut oil

So, what do we know about the types of coconut oil? Correctly! We all know that it is refined and unrefined. And that's it, our knowledge usually ends there. But everything is much more complicated.

The quality of this product depends on many factors. More useful is unrefined coconut oil. This is where I will stop.

What is unrefined coconut oil?

  • cold or hot pressed
  • first pressing or from already used “cake”
  • from old or young coconuts and even from cheap old copra (technical coconut oil)
  • and even the quality of the product obtained from it depends on the type of coconut

Information from the Journal of the Pharmaceutical Faculty of the Research University:

“Coconut oil is obtained from copra (the oily endosperm of coconuts). There are two methods for this.

Traditional cold pressing is an expensive and insufficiently effective method in modern conditions, which gives an oil yield of no more than 10%. This method is more gentle, it allows you to save all the beneficial properties of the oil.

The second method is hot pressing. It allows you to get more oil at a lower price at the expense of quality and purity.”

But what they write in Thai blogs ...

Coconut oil quality

High-quality oil is obtained by cold pressing, without heat and chemical treatment. It is transparent or translucent, colorless and without sediment, may contain particles of coconut and exudes a characteristic odor. The clarity of the oil is not always easy to determine, since some brands sell it in colored plastic bottles or in opaque glass bottles.

Unrefined coconut oil is liquid, but at temperatures below 22°C it solidifies. To return it to its previous state, it is enough to soak it in warm water for 2-3 minutes.

The smell of oil should never be rancid or sour, but some brands have learned to change the smell with synthetic flavors. In this case, it first exudes a strong aroma, which subsequently quickly disappears and the smell becomes rancid.

Not viscous, it is easy to swallow and melts in the mouth without leaving a greasy feeling. When applied to the skin, it is quickly absorbed without forming a film.

Also, the high quality of unrefined oil is evidenced by the presence of international certificates, such as Halal, USDA organic and Bio Agri Cert.

Only such oil can be drunk and eaten, dressing salads.

Some types of cheaper unrefined and refined coconut oil can be used for cooking (when frying). They usually write on it like this: “for cooking” or “coking oil”.

Which coconut oil is healthier?

The answer is clear: unrefined cold pressed coconut oil obtained by pressing. Moreover, this oil is better for both face and body skin care, and.
You can also use lower quality, unrefined coconut oil for mouthwash and douching.

I will talk about the benefits of coconut oil and write in detail in an accessible way about its impact on health.

Coconut oil has been used in cooking for a long time. If you have not yet tried, say, frying on it, adding it to sweet milk porridge, stewing, then this article is for you! So, what is the use of coconut oil in food and how to choose it correctly - read on.

Coconut oil is obtained from dried coconut meat by pressing or extraction(fat extraction by solvent). Spin (pressing) happens hot and cold(when the dried shredded coconut is preheated or not, respectively). A combination option is also possible. But it is virgin cold-pressed coconut oil ( Extra Virgin / Extra virgin coconut oil / VCO) is rich in nutrients.

Oil obtained by any of these methods may be refined and unrefined. Refined (Refined coconut oil / RBD - refined / Deodorised) goes through several stages of purification, after which it becomes lighter and more neutral in taste. This oil is cheaper, but it's still healthy because it retains important triglycerides. Refined coconut oil can be used in both sweet and savory dishes.

The greatest value is unrefined. Such a product will have a characteristic exotic sweetish aroma and nutty flavor. This oil is ideal for sweet dishes (and not only). It contains vitamins, fatty acids, water, wax ...

Please note: the packaging of coconut oil always indicates what temperature it can be served. Most often, unrefined oil can, for example, be fried over low or medium heat. Refined oil is already suitable for medium and high temperatures.

When choosing coconut oil for food, pay attention to the country of origin. India, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, Sri Lanka have world recognition.

Try not to buy oil if the method of obtaining it is not indicated on the package, as well as oil with coconut flakes (it's just not “oil” in its specific sense, but a paste).

At temperatures up to 25 degrees, coconut oil has a dense creamy white texture. Quality coconut oil starts to melt in the hot palm of your hand. If palm oil is added to the product, you will not observe such a process.

What is the benefit of coconut oil?

Due to its composition, quality coconut oil:

  • practically does not oxidize;
  • has a long shelf life;
  • not prone to rancidity;
  • does not become carcinogenic;
  • helps to absorb vitamins and minerals,
  • suitable for cooking confectionery, pastries, sauces, first courses, hot appetizers, even salads (but not cold ones).

The use of high-quality (I emphasize again) coconut oil improves the functioning of the cardiovascular system, maintains the balance of intestinal microflora, activates the healing of the mucous membranes of the gastrointestinal tract, balances metabolic processes. This product has a powerful anti-inflammatory effect.

Domestic coconut-based vegetable oils are quite expensive, so many compatriots, trying to save money, order them abroad. Buying coconut oil at an affordable cost is often only possible on the Internet. However, delivery may take different time. When ordering a similar herbal product in a plastic container, you can get a product with damaged packaging. This happens especially often in the summer, when the heat easily melts the plastic.

Cars transporting orders are most often heated to temperatures above 120 degrees, which is many times higher than the norm. In this case, the consumer receives a product with damaged packaging or a product unsuitable for further use. Therefore, it is recommended to order the delivery of coconut oil from foreign manufacturers only in the winter.

Forgive everyone who is waiting for me to post on Shu, sometimes it happens that you just can’t force yourself to speak on some topic ... But on another - a real stream of consciousness.
So, apparently, until I post everything that I think about coconut oil, no uemura will come out)))))

The topic of coconut oil filled my mind for the simple reason that quite a lot of information has accumulated based on the personal use of this wonderful product, plus recently I had a very revealing negative experience with it.
Perhaps all regular readers of Beauticians know that coconut oil is terribly useful - materials periodically appear on this topic and on how to use it.
I will tell you about what I personally do with it, as well as how to distinguish good oil from bad oil and what the use of bad oil entails.

Coconut oil is sold in almost all tropical countries where coconuts grow - these are Malaysia, Thailand, India, Bali ... It has become so popular that it can be easily found even in Russia. However, not all yogurts are equally useful; coconut oil is suitable for improving our unearthly beauty.

Here are my two contenders, using their example I will show how good oil differs from bad oil.

Personally, I use coconut for the following purposes

1. First and foremost - in quality hair masks. It is applied to the entire length of the hair, including the roots, massaged a little and under a towel for an hour. All this is done on dirty hair in order to protect them from damage during washing and to nourish the roots. I am sure that the regular use of this oil was one of the reasons why my hair stopped falling out and in general my hair began to look better.
To quote Aromarty:
“American scientists investigated the effect of mineral, sunflower and coconut oils on the condition of the hair. Coconut oil alone has been found to significantly reduce protein loss from hair during shampooing. The oil worked best if applied before washing and after it, during combing. The effect of coconut oil is explained by the fact that of all the oils studied, it spread most evenly over the hairline, preventing the penetration of water and shampoo into it. The layer of oil on the hair protected the hair fibers from swelling and damage during toweling and combing.

The same Thais (I personally observed this) use coconut oil before swimming in the sea. Well, who, if not them, knows the secrets of luxurious hair.

At one time, I didn’t try any oils on my hair, the main problem here is that they need to be washed out. And if you wash it badly, then in some places there will be beautiful icicles on your head. Burdock had to be washed 3-4 times, which in my humble opinion does more harm to hair than good. Coconut should be washed off with shampoo easily. For people with short hair, it is enough to wash their hair once, with long hair - twice. And here we touch on the first difference in the properties of good coconut oil from bad)) Bad oil is not washed out of the hair!
In one store here recently, I was given coconut oil as a gift for the purchase (in the photo this oil is on the left). In principle, it was already clear from the packaging that the gift was from the series “God forbid that we are not fit”, but do not throw it away ...))
In general, after it I washed my hair about 5 times, probably, and it never washed out. Then for another three days I walked with greasy icicles on my head and scratched like a bum, because this oil obviously did something wrong with my scalp. And such things happen due to poor oil cleaning.

Coconut oil is actually very easy to make. And of course, that in Thailand it is done by every second person who does not want to earn money from tourists? However, I would not advise buying it from merchants on the beaches, in tents, in markets and at houses. The risk of buying poorly refined oil is very high. Not without pleasant exceptions, of course, but it is better to take it in specialized stores selling cosmetics. In pharmacies - rather no than yes, there is another extreme: oil can be with chemical and aromatic additives. You should not take oil without labels if you are not sure about the manufacturer - most likely it is again made by a handicraft method.

I myself buy oil from two places: a brand store that specializes in coconut oil products and a shop near my house. In the second case, they just sell oil without a label, but the quality is in no way inferior to the first (but such places are calculated only empirically).

Coconut oil can be applied to the ends of the hair already dry, it adds shine and prevents split ends. Makes my curls always fluffy at the ends beautiful curls.
It is important not to overdo it, because oil is still not silicone and it is easy to make your head oily with it)) So all the tips need only half a drop, rubbed in the palms.

2. Good coconut oil is very pleasant to use directly on the skin of the body after shower. First of all, it has a wonderful aroma. Proper coconut oil doesn't smell like a bounty! More like freshly chopped coconut. Therefore, the smell is not strong, not sharp, but sweetish. Delicious and natural in general. Coconut oil is not as greasy as olive oil, it absorbs well, and four to five drops are needed for the whole body. And everyone probably knows about its healing and softening properties even without me. I will only note that it is also good to use it during tanning - firstly, the skin immediately looks beautiful)) and secondly, the tan will be more uniform.
As far as I know, you should not use coconut or any other oil after sunburn. Oils create a film effect on the burned skin, spreading the burn further. So aloe vera or just a cold compress is better here)))

Those who have problems with the heels of the feet, dryness or cracks, are advised to make compresses from coconut oil. I have not tried it, because. I don't suffer.
This oil is an excellent moisturizing and soothing agent after shaving and epilation, reduces irritation, tested.

3. Based on coconut oil, you can make massage blends- drip a couple of drops of essential oil into it. The only minus of coconut is that it is well absorbed into the skin, so for one massage you will need a couple of palms of oil.

4. Coconut oil can dilute dry masks and body scrubs. In this case, they acquire additional moisturizing properties without losing their own. I have already tried mixing dry salt scrubs with coconut oil and cream - the skin really turns out to be velvety.

5. All types of cosmetic products are made from coconut oil, but I want to especially mention soaps and lip balms. Coconut wonderfully softens the skin of dry lips, mixed with beeswax- you can even make such a balm yourself, it's easy)

Summarizing the difference between good oil and bad oil

- be sure to inspect the oil before buying - a beautiful label almost always guarantees production quality control of the oil. You should not buy souvenir oils - in coconuts, in wooden bottles. Here you will pay for packaging, and the quality may be below average.
- the color of the oil can be from completely transparent to light yellow. The dark yellow oil is definitely poorly refined. We look:

- the smell is pleasant, even gentle, not sharp! Be sure to sniff coconut oil before buying)
- consistency. I heard there are people who buy coconut oil in a tropical country, come home, see that it has thickened and throw it away thinking that the oil has gone bad. This, of course, is utter nonsense. The melting point of coconut oil is approx. 25 degrees, below this temperature it thickens. Then it melts directly on the skin or can be melted in a water bath if it is in a narrow vessel. During the transition from one state to another, the oil does not lose its properties. And in general, coconut is stored for a very long time, up to three years.
- I found out by experience that if it is written on coconut oil that it can be eaten and drunk, then it is good)))

Here. I hope that my writings will help someone in choosing oil and stop them from buying low-quality ones.
Thank you for your attention!
