K.K.:You've been designing for over 30 years and still continue to create clothes that are worn by the most glamorous people in the world. Where do you get so much inspiration?
R.K.: At the very beginning of my career, I didn’t know anything about money at all. I thought that I would create things and meet beautiful women, and therefore be able to have fun. All my life I have been obsessed with the desire to have fun, and I think this is what constantly inspires me.

K.K.: Now the Cavalli brand is a huge empire. Tell us how it all started?
R.K.: I have had a few very good ideas, everything was built on them. For example, leather prints and recycled jeans, which were sold in my first store in St. Tropez in 1973. Each item was unique, beautiful, made using exclusive production techniques. I became successful so quickly that I did my first show at the Sala Bianca in Florence with brands such as Armani, Versace and Missoni.

K.K.:How did you feel having achieved such success at a very early stage in your career?
R.K.: It was fantastic, but in those days being a designer meant something completely different from what it means now. Designers weren't as popular as rock stars. And the women of that time were different from the women of today. When they bought a nice jacket, they ripped off the label because they didn't want their friends to know where the item was purchased.

K.K.:Do you think that during the entire period of your work in the industry you have seen a lot of changes in it?
R.K.: Things were slower then, not as fast as they are now. Now it has become more difficult to create something unique, because everyone is chasing the number of sales. All this contradicts the concept of creativity.

K.K.: Your work became incredibly coveted in the early 90s. Everyone liked your things, celebrities wore them. How did it happen?
R.K.: In the early 90s, I started experimenting with prints and denim, as well as stretch denim. I also made prints on very thin silks. I saw the beauty that can be created from this silk, and that's when the stars began to come to me. Gradually I became a red carpet designer. I think the stars realized that I can give them confidence in their sexuality. They realized that they could be incredibly sexy and beautiful at the same time.

K.K.:Have you always wanted to design celebrity clothes?
R.K.: No, absolutely not. Actually I am a very passive person, I accept life day by day and it was not planned by me. When I first met Jennifer Lopez and Cindy Crawford, I was as excited as a little boy! And I became close with these people, because they are like me, they also have a shy side. For example, Victoria Beckham. She is so shy. I remember the first time I went out with her on the podium. She was so nervous and gripped my hand so tightly that I could feel her pulse.

K.K.: With Now you are as famous as the people you design clothes for. What is it like?
R.K.: I must say that to be famous, you have to be a good actor. Don't think that all of us want to be famous all the time. I would like to be famous seven days a month. All of us - me, Jennifer, Victoria - sometimes step back, want to hide and keep something inside us.

K.K.:You met your wife Eva in 1977 and since then she has become a huge part of your life as a designer. Can you call her your muse?
R.K.: Certainly. At the very beginning, when I meet people and fall in love with them, they become my muses for a while. But she became my muse for many years, she still inspires me.

K.K.:How did she influence the Cavalli brand itself?
R.K.: She is Libra by zodiac sign and she is incredibly balanced. Therefore, Eva is very good at managing what I do. In a way, that scares me because sometimes I feel like she knows more about the fashion business than I do.

K.K.:What do you see when you think of Cavalli's heritage, what imprint should this brand leave on the fashion industry?
R.K.: I think that my taste is very well on the border of sexuality and vulgarity. He is very sexy and chic, but sometimes he is so close to vulgarity that it becomes dangerous. I see women wearing my clothes in the wrong way and it pisses me off. They wear it in a vulgar way. I want people to see that you can wear something and look incredibly sexy and balanced, but still be chic.
