What beards look like in Chechen: photo. Chechens: appearance of men and women, character traits, origin, traditions Dagestanis are blondes

The racial image of the Chechens

The Chechen people, like all other peoples, does not represent a single whole in racial terms. But, like most peoples, they have formed a certain anthropological type, which is perceived as typical. This type is indisputably related to the Anterior Asian race. In this regard, the Chechens do not differ from other Caucasian peoples, whose anthropological basis also refers to the race described above. Her character traits are well known. We are talking about strong people of medium and tall build with a non-elongated, short head shape, a pronounced aquiline nose and usually dark hair and eyes.

But even among the Anterior Asian race, which is distributed over a vast territory, it is necessary to distinguish between subspecies, just as we do among the light Northwestern European race. Among the peoples known to me with a Western Asian racial basis - northern Armenians, eastern Georgians with Pshavs and Khevsurs, Azerbaijani Tatars, a number of Dagestan peoples, Ingush and a small number of Kumyks and Ossetians - I also, in my opinion, found various variants of this race.

To describe the Chechen Front-Asian, I want to first express myself negatively. His profile does not have those excessive Western Asian forms, which, for example, are often observed among Armenians. A similar profile of an Armenian, approximately the one that was published by Lushan and was replicated in various books on racial studies, is not found among Chechens at all. However, according to my observations, this type is rare among Armenians as well. The Chechen I photographed (pictures 5 and 6 on the right) has, perhaps, the most extreme Western Asian forms among his people.

The usual Chechen anthropological type is shown in photo No. 7. This is, therefore, a quite moderate Anterior Asian profile, albeit with a large, but still only slightly curved and not fleshy nose, and with a tolerably formed chin. The latter is especially conspicuous in comparison with image No. 5, in which, as in general in clear Anterior Asian profiles, the chin recedes further and is itself flatter than what corresponds to our ideal of beauty. The profile in image #7 is not conspicuous, it is balanced and pleasing due to its scope and bold, large outlines. Also on the right, the seated man (image #8) is in this category. Anthropological forms are often common, almost not reminiscent of a bird of prey-like Persian origin, but on the contrary, having almost straight and thin noses and in which only short skulls are reminiscent of the Near Asian heritage. These regular facial features were the cause of the former glory of Caucasian beauty and prompted Blumenbach to introduce the concept of the Caucasian race. Previously, especially in the era of the Caucasian wars, when Bodenstedt was still in the Caucasus, the Caucasian peoples were too idealized, especially with regard to their bodily beauty. Later, on the contrary, they went to the other extreme. Anthropological publications, which display the most extreme types of faces, are misleading. This applies, for example, to the photograph published in Günther's Racial Studies. It depicts an Imeretian from Kutaisi, who is perhaps the ugliest man that could be found in this city.

As for the physique, I noticed that among the Armenians, Eastern Georgians, Khevsurs and Dagestanis, people of medium height and strong physique are mostly common, more often stocky than slender, but by no means tall; in part, the growth is very small, for example, in some regions of Dagestan (Kazikumukh, Gumbet). Compared to them, Chechens are conspicuous because of their height. It is enough to go from the last Khevsurian settlement of Shatil to the Kist Jarego and be amazed at the sharp anthropological change: among the Khevsurs there are stocky, broad figures, among the Kists they are tall, slender, I would even say elegant in appearance. This observation of mine was also confirmed by Rudde's reports.

The fullness that I observed among Armenians and Eastern Georgians, both among men and women, especially in old age, is almost completely absent; thinness and leanness are common.

Chechens seem tall only in comparison with their neighbors; the averages hardly compare with those of the North Germans. I saw people taller than 1.85 m with certainty only twice. One was a Kist (meaning a highlander) from Melkhist, the other, the tallest Chechen in general, was the already mentioned Grand Vizier of the former Emirate - Dishninsky. By the way, this circumstance played an important role in increasing his authority among ordinary highlanders. He was a completely aristocratic personality, combining in himself all the virtues of his race, as well as, of course, its shortcomings.

In the foregoing, the racial basis of the Chechen people was called Western Asian, but with the same right it can be called Dinaric. I met Dinarids in large numbers among Serb prisoners of war during my travels in Carinthia and Styria (historical regions of Austria) and if I compare them with the dominant race among Chechens, then I do not see any significant differences in order to speak against the Dinaric race about some then a special variety of the Near East. For Armenians and some Dagestanis, this may be correct to speak of a special sub-branch of the Near East race, but even then only in the sense that the distinctive features of the Dinaric race among them are too excessively pronounced (thus, this distances them from the Dinarids); the shape of the head gravitates towards the shape of a "tower skull", the nose is ugly large, the growth is partially below the standard. For the Chechens, this is just not typical in general, it is also not typical for the Ingush and Ossetians, and also, according to the generally accepted idea, for the Circassians. Thus, only with these reservations, I classify the Chechens as a Persian race.

The special position of the Chechen Western Asian will yet be proved by the color of the hair, eyes and skin. People with pure black hair, very dark eyes, like Armenians and partially Georgians, are not often found among Chechens, in any case, there is no such thing that both signs coincide. Therefore, one can only speak of an anthropological type, which is generally dark. Most often dark (and also black) are the hair of the head, while the eyes, on the contrary, are brown or a color that is difficult to describe with accuracy. It can probably be called light brown, with a slight admixture of green. Clear, translucent light brown eyes I have seen more often in women than in men. But the first thing that catches the eye of the traveler is a large number of blonds and fair-eyed, mostly the latter. It is difficult to say which particular tone prevails: both gray and gray-green eyes are common, and pure blue, sky blue eyes are also common. Blue eyes, which in Northern Germany could not have been clearer.

Light hair is somewhat rarer than light eyes. But here the reason is a very strong gradual darkening. There are many more fair-haired children than adults, and dark-haired adults assured me that they had blond hair as children. I noticed early graying in men; usually in thirty-year-olds, gray hair is clearly noticeable. Surely one of the reasons is the constant wearing of hats. Shaved bald men are also not uncommon. The study of hair color is naturally made more difficult by this custom. And in general, you need to go to spend the night with people to see uncovered heads; people with a bare head in the open air can not be seen: no matter a man, woman or child. Never.

I have also seen redheads many times; their eyes were light brown.
More often than blond hair, there are blond beards, and I remember the brown-red tone, as well as in men with dark hair and brown eyes. Beards are plentiful and even, they are worn with a certain accuracy. Fluttering red beards like those of Barbarossa are also common, and it should be noted that henna is not used. But most men only wear mustaches.

The skin of light Chechens is tender and fragile, young girls have a beautiful complexion. The faces of the men are reddened by wind and weather, and not swarthy, a circumstance especially characteristic of the Nordic race. The body is white in the best sense. I saw this once in Melchist. A certain number of Kistins (meaning the mountaineers) were busy transporting a tree along the Argun, they themselves, standing in the water, transported unbound tree trunks, towed them in the right direction, holding long poles in their muscular fists and guiding the logs between the boulders washed by the foam of the waves. Although they were not dressed, they were not embarrassed by our approaching Georgian column. Similar cases have never happened to me in the rest of the Muslim Caucasus. Extreme scrupulousness prevents men from appearing undressed. They also dislike the sight of at least partially naked bodies of others; I was convinced of this many times, when in the winter of 1919/1920 I lay seriously ill for a whole month in a private house in Botlikh (Andean Dagestan), I could not persuade a single man to help me in any way. When I tried to get up, everyone left the room despite my objections. I do not think that this is due to any superstitions, such as the fear of infection.

The freer outlook of Chechens is also reflected in the freer position of women, who move freely without being veiled, who are allowed to speak openly with men, which is hardly observed in inner Dagestan.

For a more accessible description of the Chechen blond, I want to compare it with the light northern Europeans. S. Paudler, in his work on the light races, clearly distinguished between the Dalian Cro-Magnon race and the usual dolichocephalic (i.e., long-headed) representatives of the Nordic race. Of these two races, only the latter is suitable for comparison. Light Caucasians are similar to her because of the greater smoothness and evenness of the lines, fuller lips and more rounded eye slits. Rigid, rough facial features, which, for example, are often found among the inhabitants of Westphalia (a region in Germany), are absent, judging by my observations. Not to mention the extreme Dalian anthropological types published by Paudler from Scandinavia. As far as I know, they are not found among other Caucasian peoples. Comparison with the light Northwest European dolichocephals is permissible only in relation to the color and shape of the face. In the structure of the skull, Chechen blondes do not differ from their fellow brunettes. And here and there the same short, straight skulls, the same aquiline noses.

This slender, brachycephalic (i.e., short-headed), large-nosed race, found together in both dark and light form, is so predominant among the Chechens that the remaining racial components present cannot change the overall picture. Dominant among other anthropological types is similar to the Alpine race. That is, most often we are talking about dark, low people with a shapeless physique and a rough skull. Figures 5 and 6 show a representative of this race, who still has relatively regular features, especially a rather graceful nose, while in general the faces of the Alpines seem ugly. Judging by my observations, the Chechen Alpine lacks the rounded shapes characteristic of the Alpines of Central and Western Europe. The body is rather toned and angular, which is most likely due to lifestyle. I cannot say that I noticed a significant number of anthropological types mixed between the high Anterior Asian and Alpine anthropological types. Both coexist rather simultaneously: I do not remember meeting a tall Chechen with a bulky head and a short nose and a flat profile of the face, or vice versa short and stocky with a Middle Asian face and skull. Both men in images 5 and 6 are photographed seated and appear to be the same height. In fact, the Anterior Asian on the right was a head taller than the Alpine on the left.

As for the question of the geographical distribution of certain anthropological types, I can only speak with some certainty about the distribution of blondes. And in this regard, I can say that individual regions show big differences.

There is no doubt that the percentage of blondes in the western part of Chechnya is higher than in the east. In the west, there are areas where the population can be called mostly fair.

First of all, this is the territory along the Chanty-Argun from Melkhist to Shatoi. Especially in these places, I was surprised by the large number of generally Nordic appearances, especially since blond hair is combined with exceptionally good growth. In Maista, a district adjacent to Melchist, this was less noticeable* (*among the children, I noticed some distinctly Jewish facial features). Because of the correct facial features, I still remember the population of the Khochara valley. And I already wrote about Shatoi girls. Further, the upper Sharo-Argun should be named, although to a lesser extent than Shatoi. In Chaberloi, I was only in the eastern and western villages, Chobakh-kineroi and Khoy, where I did not notice a significant number of blondes, although it was Cheberloi who was described to me by some Chechens as a territory with a mostly fair population. In general, it must be said that some Chechens who traveled a lot were well aware of the anthropological features of a particular region, such as the high growth of the inhabitants of Melkhist. My observations about the spread of the fair population were generally confirmed by them. When I asked about the reason for the differences, they answered me without much thought that in such and such a region there are more blondes, and in such and such there are more brunettes. The disappearance of the light element in the east is especially felt in the Southern Aukh, and after crossing the Andian watershed, the dark element already dominates the Dagestan territory, both in Gumbet and Andi. At the same time, the number of rude and ugly faces is increasing. This is manifested most expressively in the village of Benoy. I would also like to add that among the rest of the Chechens, and especially among the Gumbets who buy corn from them, the residents of Benoy have a rather bad reputation.

The fact of the predominance of the light element in the west is especially interesting if we look at the history of the settlement of the territory. It turns out that in the territories inhabited, judging by the legends, there are primarily more blondes than in the lands later developed in the east. The thought suggests itself that the cause must be sought in the later colonization of the eastern regions, and, as already mentioned, in the possible absorption of another population.

On the plain, I did not notice a clear predominance of a light or dark anthropological type. Here also (as in the mountains) tall, slender people with aquiline noses predominate.

Among the Caucasian peoples known to me, no doubt, largest number blondes is among the Chechens. In ethnographic works, as well as in the literature on the Caucasus, they mainly write about Ossetians. In principle, the reason is clear. Ossetians are an Indo-Germanic people and in the era of Indo-Germanic studies they were given great attention. In fact, the percentage of blondes among Ossetians is hardly higher than among Chechens.

Nevertheless, I got the impression that the features and facial expressions of Ossetians are more similar to European ones than those of Chechens and Ingush. The Ossetian owners of the hotel in Vladikavkaz, blonds, really bothered me with a completely unfamiliar language from their lips; it seemed to me that the Germans were in front of me. Perhaps the fact that the Ossetians are mostly Christians also played a role, to the same extent, the reason may be in the more numerous intelligentsia than their eastern neighbors.

Von Eckert, who anthropologically researched 70 Chechens (list of references, No. 12), wrote at the end of the publication that all had dark hair. This conclusion is very unusual, assuming that the readings are based on accurate observations. But we are talking exclusively about the inhabitants of Aukh, that is, the Chechen east.

Svaneti is one of the places in the Caucasus where blondes are born.

When the conversation comes about the inhabitants of the Caucasus, the image of a dark-skinned person, with dark hair and thick black eyebrows, immediately forms in the head. This is how, according to the majority, Ossetians, Ingush, Georgians and Armenians look like. But often bright children are born in families of representatives of this group of nationalities. No, they are far from blondes of the Scandinavian type, but light brown hair, gray, blue or green eyes are not so rare.

Mixed Marriages: Nature's Lottery

Why is this happening? One of the reasons, of course, is intermarriage in previous generations. The "white-skinned" gene is recessive, so brunettes are born in mixed couples much more often. However, the genetic information is preserved and after a few generations a smiling blue-eyed blond may be born. And then the young father should not grab his heart, but first of all you need to look into the album with family photos. There is sure to be a golden-haired beauty or a man with hair the color of ripe wheat.

The legacy of ancestors

But not only close ancestors can cause the appearance of a fair-haired baby in a Caucasian family. It is enough to turn to historical sources to find out that the ancestors of the Ossetians and Ingush were not at all like their contemporaries. In the annals, they are described as tall, with white skin and mostly blond hair.

Peoples of the Caucasus.

The Alans, as this nomadic ethnic group was called, lived on a vast territory stretching from the Roman Empire to Asia. After numerous wars, some of them settled on the territory of modern Ossetia and Ingushetia, mixed with local tribes. But even here heredity and evolutionary mechanisms came into play - dark hair is inherited more often, in a warm climate it is much more comfortable to have skin rich in melanin. Therefore, the population gradually became more and more like contemporaries.

The proof of this hypothesis is also the notes of the researcher ethnographer I.I. Pantyukhov. He argued that the percentage of bright eyes among individual peoples of the Caucasus ranges up to 30%, which is comparable to the rates of Europeans and Slavs.

Blonde Circassians

The Circassians were one of the most numerous nationalities living on the territory of the modern Stavropol Territory. Ethnographers described them as "fair-haired, with a red mustache and fair skin, gray or light brown eyes."

Circassians in national dress.

However, during the Russian-Caucasian war, a significant part fled to Turkey. But many stayed. The closest genetically to the Circassians are the inhabitants of the village of Karm, it is difficult to distinguish them from a European exactly until they start talking.

Blonde Circassians.

There is also a hypothesis that the Circassians are the descendants of the Slavs, in particular the Cossacks, since the self-name "Cossackia" is often found in studies. (Russian antiquities in art monuments. I. Tolstoy and N. Kondakov)

Caucasian Albanians

Blond Caucasians.

Lived on the territory of the Caucasus and the tribe, which was called the Albanians - white-skinned, fair-haired Caucasians. They were strikingly different from the Turks, were taller, had completely different beliefs and culture. Even the self-name of the nation comes from the Latin albus - “white”, which confirms the theory of historians about tribes that are not similar to the Caspian type that is now common.

Unfortunately, a significant part of the Albanians were destroyed during the numerous wars with the Arabs, but "genetic echoes" are also found among contemporaries.

Svans

Svans live somewhere high in the mountains.

Unlike the Albanians, the Svans did not disappear, they did not dissolve into the turbulent cauldron of small ethnic groups. They, like four thousand years ago, live in the highest mountainous region of Georgia (from 600 to 2500 meters above sea level). Their language is significantly different from Georgian, but gradually disappears, remaining only in the everyday speech of the older generation.

Swann boy.

The royal colonel Bartholomew described these people as tall, with a proud profile, fair-haired and blue-eyed. He noted their innocence and kindness, as well as the fact that the Svans sacredly honored their traditions. Their culture developed in isolation for a long time, this allowed them to maintain genetic homogeneity.

And even after uniting with Georgia into one state, the Georgians were afraid of the Svans. Blond highlanders honored traditions, and blood feud was one of the most common ways to resolve family disputes. Therefore, mixed marriages have become commonplace only in the last few decades. And the gene of "golden curls" often manifests itself, displacing the dominant Caspian appearance.

Chechens

Modern Chechens and Ingush are direct descendants of the Vainakhs, a Hurrian ethnic group. However, around the third millennium BC, these tribes mixed with others that carried the genetic characteristics of the Cro-Manoid race (the modern representatives of this race are the Slavs, as well as the Finns and Swedes).

Blue-eyed Chechens.

The genetic "cocktail" explains such a wide variety of types of appearance in Chechnya. When the genes of the Asiatic race dominate, the child is born swarthy, with dark hair. When the Cro-Magnoid type takes over, the appearance practically does not differ from the Slavic one.

Nomads: migrating for salvation

Another genetic branch that became part of the ethnic heritage of the Caucasus, predominantly fair-haired and white-skinned nomadic Polovtsy, who fled from numerous oppressions from warring tribes. They gradually assimilated, merged with the locals and actually dissolved into the ethnic groups that dominated the Ciscaucasia.

And this mixture of races is wonderful in its own way, because it once again reminds us that every person who left descendants is immortal. Its tiny part lives for centuries. And through the centuries, blue eyes look at the world, exactly the same as those of a young boy who built the legendary towers of Svaneti.

The appearance of Chechens in the photo of famous people

Anthropologically, the Chechens belong to the Caucasian type of the Caucasoid race. Published in late XIX- the beginning of the 20th century, the Encyclopedic Dictionary of Brockhaus and Efron, gives the following description Chechen appearance:

Chechens are tall and well built. Women are beautiful. Anthropologically, the Chechens represent a mixed type. Eye color, for example, varies (in equal proportions) from black to more or less dark brown and from blue to more or less light green. The nose is often upturned and concave. The hair color also shows transitions from black to more or less dark blond. The facial index is 75.26 (Chechens) and 76.72 (Ingush).

The appearance of the Chechens in comparison with other Caucasian peoples, it stands out for the greatest dolichocephaly. Among the Chechens proper, however, not only many subrachycephals are found, but also quite a few pure brachycephals with a head index from 84 and even up to 87.62.

Genetic genealogy. Most men in the Republic of Chechnya belong to the Y-DNA haplogroup J2, which originated in the Middle East. The second most common in the Republic of Chechnya is the haplogroup J1 (about 21%).
