Tools for removing weeds in the country. How to get rid of dandelions on the site forever: mechanical, chemical and folk methods. How to remove dandelions, preventive measures to combat dandelions. Durable and flexible combination tools

Dandelion - famous medicinal plant used not only in medicine, but also in cosmetology. However, it is also a weed, causing great inconvenience to gardeners and gardeners, because getting rid of this perennial plant is quite difficult. It is the question of how to get rid of dandelions on the site forever that the following material will be devoted to.

How to get rid of dandelions on the site forever: general information

Most summer residents often encountered such a problem as dandelion on their plots. In fact, this outwardly pleasant plant can cause a lot of trouble. The thing is that the dandelion is a perennial plant, it spreads quite quickly and easily, because just a small breeze is enough - and the seeds are already spreading to other parts of the earth. And for it to germinate, just slightly moist soil is enough.

At the same time, this plant is quite tenacious, and it is almost impossible to get rid of it with an ordinary hoe, because if even a small piece of the root is left in the ground, much more yellow “guests” will appear in your garden next year.

Also, dandelions adapt quite easily to any weather conditions. For example, they are absolutely not afraid of frost, because they are able to germinate even in a compost heap, if they are not very deeply buried.

Therefore, most gardeners have long come to terms with this yellow "invasion" on their site, and are no longer even trying to somehow prevent this. The only thing is that some from time to time break through the bushes that have arisen, trying to exterminate them before flowering. However, in most cases, part of the root remains in the ground as usual, and next year new flowers sprout around this place.

It is at the root that the "invulnerability" of this seemingly harmless flower lies, it is rather fragile and long, so it is almost impossible to get it all or tear it. How to be and what to do with this misfortune to summer residents? Let's try to understand this issue in more detail.

How to get dandelions out, how to deal with dandelions: troubleshooting methods

Today, there are three ways to deal with dandelions:

Mechanical;

Chemical;

Folk.

Mechanical methods

Let's start with the simplest - a mechanical effect on the weed. If you decide to act without "chemistry" or other folk methods, then you will need a shovel and a lot of patience. Don't forget, the dandelion root is long, but very fragile, so you need to be careful. Therefore, you need to dig out a weed completely and carefully so that there is not a trace of it left in the ground, otherwise all your work will be in vain.

Often these flowers sprout in the seams of tiles or small asphalt cracks. AT this case you just need to cut the plant lower and cover the cut with table salt, this will help not only stop its growth, but also completely destroy the dandelion.

In addition to a shovel, you can also use a special tool for fighting dandelions, which is similar in shape to English letter V from blades. This device is very effective in the fight against these plants. The principle of its operation is as follows: we place the tool in the ground in the place where the weed grows, press the handle and the plant is already on the surface.

Another option on how to get dandelions out, how to deal with dandelions is to cut them on the lawn. However, this method will not help you completely get rid of the weed, but will only stop its spread.

You can also limit the access of this plant to sunlight. To do this, you will need to cover the flowers with pieces of cardboard or plastic bags, and due to lack of sun, dandelions will begin to die in a few days.

Chemical methods

If mechanical methods have not had the desired effect, the plant can also be dealt with chemically, in particular, the use of herbicides. And here, even opponents of "chemistry" are forced to admit that they often use them, since often after a mechanical impact on a weed, its root breaks, which leads to the emergence of new growth.

Herbicides in this case can serve as drugs purchased in special stores, as well as food vinegar. The latter contains acid, which is the herbicide. However, for maximum effect, it is still recommended to use an acid with a higher concentration level.

An important point: to increase the productivity of the fight against dandelions, try to get rid of them in the autumn.

The thing is that it is in the fall that this weed accumulates various nutrients in its roots, while the leaves die off before the winter period. So, if the herbicides are applied to the leaves in the fall, the product will reach the roots much faster, killing them. In addition, it is not recommended to mow the lawn before processing, in order to maximum amount leaves were exposed to herbicides.

Folk methods

Many summer residents do not accept the use of chemistry on the site and prefer folk, proven by more than one generation, methods. However, each of the following options right approach, can give a result no worse than after a "chemical attack".

So, the list of tested folk remedies dandelion control looks like this:

Boiling water. To eliminate the weed from the site, you need to systematically water it 2-3 times a day with boiling water, this will quickly lead to its death;

Alcohol. This method is not so popular, but is no less effective than the previous one. It is necessary to dilute vodka in a ratio of 1 to 10 and pour each dandelion pointwise. The solution will burn the root system of the plant, and it will quickly die;

Salt. We need 1 tbsp. a spoonful of salt, which we will sprinkle with yellow weeds. But be careful not to let salt get on plants growing nearby, otherwise they will also begin to die;

Blowtorch. This option sounds very strange, but many summer residents are used quite productively. Each dandelion must be heated with a lamp for several seconds;

Mulching. Very safe and effective method. Vegetables are grown on dark film, and since there is no light, weeds and other crops do not grow;

gluten corn flour. She can sprinkle the area, but until the moment when dandelions appear, within 5-6 weeks. Since this method is productive only during the flouring period, the procedure should be repeated several times during the growing season;

Table vinegar. It is necessary to systematically lubricate each weed with vinegar, which will soon lead to its death;

Hydrochloric acid. You can buy it at any hardware store. For these purposes, one liter will be enough, it costs, by the way, quite inexpensively. Be sure to wear latex gloves before handling. Use a kitchen syringe to apply. Try not to inhale acid fumes, they are harmful to the body. Some time after treatment, the weeds turn brown and die.

Dandelion control, preventive measures

Preventive measures should be carried out regularly, otherwise dandelions will spread very quickly throughout the site, and it will be much more difficult to get rid of them. The best prevention is regular monitoring of the state of the territory and proper care for her.

To avoid clogging the site with dandelions, it is recommended to follow simple preventive rules:

1) try to remove the grass from the site after cutting to prevent the spread of weeds;

2) track the presence of "bald spots" on the ground, because emptiness is the best place for the germination of these flowers. When empty places appear, it is recommended to re-sow them with grass in the fall;

3) the height of the cut grass should be approximately 8 cm. This will allow it to give the soil the necessary protection.

That's all the ways and recommendations that will help you get rid of such a problem on the site as dandelions. Remember that this plant, despite its external beauty and harmlessness, is a malicious weed, and all measures must be taken in time to remove it from the site in order to avoid aggravating the situation in the future.

Try first to improve aeration by piercing the turf garden views or special foot aerators. Feed the grass and make it known. And if this does not help, you will have to think about drainage ditches from the edges of the lawn.
  3. The principle of operation of the weed extractor is simple: you insert the pin into the ground with force, scroll 180 degrees and take out the plant along with

As you can see, the preliminary struggle is extended in time, and it is better to start it either in summer, and sow grass in autumn, or in August-September, leaving the lawn “fallow” for the winter, and sowing it in early spring. This method of processing perfectly burns annual plants, which especially bother the lawn in the first year of life. But the roots of dandelion, couch grass, plantain can still remain in the soil even after such a tough chemical weeding.

Powder herbicides should be used in sunny weather.

If there are not many weeds on the lawn and they grow in separate islands, then you can not process the entire lawn, but only areas with weeds.

If the pre-treatment of weeds was not carried out, then in the first season they will actively begin to win a place under the sun from thin seedlings of grasses. To be honest, even after herbicides, harmful "neighbors" will still appear, but not in such numbers. Therefore, the struggle continues, but becomes more careful in order to save young greens.

What else is used in such work?

Lawn sand should be applied in May-June, preferably in sunny weather. It is scattered, and after 2 days the lawn is well shed if it does not rain. Haircut should also be postponed for at least 4 days. Grass cut after treatment should not be used for mulching.

Herbicides are used for local or selective action.

Lawn Care Rules:

To remove large weeds, a tool made from an old garden shovel is suitable. The canvas is cut in the form of a sharp rectangle and bent at an angle of 70-80°. This device allows you to remove the weed along with the roots without damaging the cultivated plants.

If some area in the garden is heavily overgrown with weeds, then in autumn dig it up without turning over the layers of the earth, for which it is best to use a pitchfork. In this case, the grass root system will simply die in frost, and with the advent of spring, you can safely remove the weeds.

A crevice cleaner is used to remove grass and weeds from crevices between tiles. And it will come in handy if you want the garden paths on the site to look neat and clean.

There is a special tool that helps remove weeds with long roots and is a hollow cylinder with teeth. To remove dandelions, you need to cover the plant with this device and insert the cylinder into the ground by about 15 cm, then remove the weed along with the ground.

To destroy annual weeds on lawns, they try to mow them along with the grass before flowering. In this case, they will not have time to form seeds and disperse them around the site. From cutting, the roots of annuals will not die out, but the plant will become weakened. Repeated and subsequent cuttings will finally “finish off” the pests. They mow the lawn as it grows, but at least once every two weeks.

Powder or granular type herbicides are selective chemicals that are mixed with fertilizer and spread over the lawn.

But chemical preparations should be taken only after the lawn gets stronger, not earlier than a year after its arrangement. In addition, not all types of lawn grass favorably tolerate the effects of herbicides, especially dicotyledons, which can disappear altogether. After the treatment of the lawn with herbicides, it requires special care. So, if continuous exposure preparations were used, then you can cut the grass only after 4 days.

Such a tool is produced by both GARDENA and the Russian brand Sibrtech. Advice! Try to carry out the first mowing only when the blades of grass rise to a height of about 7 cm, otherwise it will be difficult for them to recover.

This should be done in sunny calm weather, after 2 days the site needs to be watered. Mowing after this should not be carried out for several days, giving herbicides the opportunity to penetrate into the soil.Use such funds possible only in calm and dry weather. Selective herbicides are selected separately for each plant and applied purposefully to it through a sprayer. Before using any chemicals, you need to carefully study the instructions for their use and do everything strictly in accordance with it, trying not to get on the plants growing near.

For the manual method of weed control, you must use a garden fork and any other garden tool. This is a rather painstaking work that requires a lot of time and effort. For this operation, gardeners often use a hoe. If a rectangular hole is cut in the metal part, the earth will pass through it during operation without sticking to the tool. This is especially useful when cultivating wet soil.

A large number of gardeners and gardeners are familiar with the problem of weeds that flooded the land and cause a lot of inconvenience. Dandelions are also unwanted guests in the country, the seeds of this plant are carried by the wind and grow into new colonies.

The root remover easily enters the soft soil of a young lawn, but it must be driven into tightly interwoven sod with effort.

Why is the lawn overgrown with moss and lichen?

In addition to annuals, there are creeping plants that do not fall under the height of the haircut and calmly develop further. This includes wood lice, bindweed, etc. They fight with them by combing the lawn with a rake. When mowing with trimmers, you still have to rake the grass left on the lawn, but behind the lawn mowers, you do not need to collect anything. Therefore, the owners deliberately comb the lawn to undermine the roots of creeping plants and rake out the felt that accumulates near the grass roots. Felt is formed by dried blades of grass. If it is not removed, the quality of the lawn will deteriorate, and bald spots may form.

Liquid herbicides are poured from a watering can directly onto broad-leaved weeds at the very beginning of summer, following the instructions for their use. After processing, all instruments are thoroughly washed. This type of herbicide is used mainly for lawns of a small area on a calm and dry day.

Do not get carried away with the use of herbicides, as they can be very harmful to the lawn itself.

When using the tool, you should be careful not to disturb the sod, and remove the weed along with the root. After weeding, no shoots and roots of removed plants should remain on the site, because after watering they will easily grow back. A hand cultivator is necessary for weeding and loosening the soil. For its manufacture, 4 strips 15 cm long and 3 cm wide are cut out of a sheet of durable metal, sharpened and bent at an angle of 90 °. After that, they are welded to a metal bar, a wooden handle is attached to the back side.

Dandelions have a very powerful tap root, reaching a length of 25 cm. And it is not so easy to completely extract it, since it is fragile and will break sooner. Subsequently, new weeds will grow from the remaining piece of root. The easiest and safest way, which does not require financial investments from you, is to dig up flowers from the root. Or, cut down the aerial part of dandelions once a week, after five such treatments, the plants will begin to die. An excellent remedy for dealing with bored dandelions is ordinary table salt. Pour it on the central part of the flower, after a while the weed will die, and a brown spot will remain in its place. When sprinkling salt on dandelions, be extremely careful not to spill it on healthy crops. Otherwise, plants near the weeds will follow. Purchase a tool from a specialized store whose main purpose is to remove dandelions and other weeds. The tool is a large V-shaped screw made of blades. With this device, it will not be difficult to get rid of dandelions on the land. You just need to immerse it in the ground with a weed and press the button, after which the dandelion will be extracted from the soil along with the root. If the use of these mechanical methods is impractical due to the fact that the weeds have already grown quite strongly or the area of \u200b\u200bthe land is very large, you can resort to extreme measures - the use of insecticides and chemicals to eliminate dandelions. Before using this or that drug, carefully read the instructions and follow them clearly, follow the safety rules: do not inhale the vapors of the chemical mixture, use gloves, if it gets into your eyes, rinse them and seek medical help.

Hand weeding is a very labor intensive process. That is why we have collected some important recommendations from experts that will make the job easier.

The main one is that the use of such drugs is detrimental to both weeds and other plants and crops in your garden.

Working on the land takes a lot of time and effort. To make their life easier, summer residents use various tools that simplify the implementation of many tasks on the ground. A device for removing all weeds with roots can be made independently or you can buy a ready-made tool. All of them are quite easy to use and help to facilitate the work. Let's talk about the most common.

Its second name is Sapa. This is something between a shovel and a pickaxe. Sapa - the main tool of gardeners - is the most beloved, most common and versatile. Choppers loosen row-spacings, spud potato rows, clear virgin areas of weeds, and break up large clods of earth. Chopper will help plant seedlings, plant various seeds. The working part of the chopper must be made of high quality steel. This part is in the form of a triangle, rectangle or trapezoid (the latter is the most convenient to work with).

The handle for the chopper should be comfortable in height and thickness and made of wood.

Sapa (hoe) combined

This weed remover consists of two tools - glanders and a rake. It has the appearance of a rectangular blade made of steel. One side has a sharp edge (sometimes blunt), the other side has several teeth. The tool must be placed on a wooden holder of a convenient length. With this tool it is possible to successfully remove and collect weeds between rows of closely spaced plants at the same time. In addition, it can be used to clear and level the ground the day before planting. It will help to make grooves, spud plants, loosen the ground.

Weed Rake

This device helps to carefully pull out a weed plant with a long root from the ground with the help of sharp steel teeth. The teeth are deeply stuck into the ground, clasping the root. You can do this without much effort. Removing the root comes down to a few movements:

  • we insert the tool into the ground where the weed grows;
  • we capture it;
  • pull out;
  • remove weeds in a trash can.

The procedure is clear, focused and very effective. This maintains cleanliness. This tool is convenient to use in flower beds and lawns to destroy weeds with deep roots (, dandelions).

Cultivator-root remover

This garden puller will help get rid of long, rod-shaped roots that plantain, sorrel, dandelion have. In addition, with its help, you can also get rid of the roots of old thickened shrubs, which can be equated to weeds. The tool looks like a two-pronged fork with flat wide teeth and a gap between them.

The special arrangement and shape of the root remover teeth help to do this job quickly and easily. In addition, the device helps to process the near-stem circle of fruit trees without harming the roots. The cultivator is easy to handle: it is easy to assemble and operate. Instructions for use will tell you how to assemble it.

V-shaped root remover

This is another version of the root remover. It has a V-shaped blade mounted on a long handle. It helps to easily get rid of weeds with well-branched fibrous roots. It happens quite simply. You pick the V-shaped part of the tool at the very base of the plant and remove it from the ground. Long tap roots cannot be completely removed, but the main part of the root will pull out. Usually the root remover is made of high-quality steel.

Fork

Without this tool, your weed control, anywhere, will not do. The tool has the appearance of a curved metal nozzle, which significantly increases the strength of the handle. And this, in turn, allows you to easily cope with weeds that have deep and well-developed roots. Forks with tines bent at an angle of 45 degrees can make shallow loosening, simultaneously removing loose weeds in the ground.

It should be added that the tool is easy to use, has great reliability, does not take up much space. In addition, it is easy to use on small patches of land and where weeds are difficult to reach.

Fokine flat cutter

This device is convenient to use against small weeds. The flat cutter can be deepened into the ground by 2-3 cm. It can be used to avoid the tedious plucking of small weeds. When working, it, like a scythe, is pulled underground parallel to its surface.

You can make a weed removal tool yourself, for this you can adapt old unusable inventory, as well as other improvised and easily accessible materials. Easy-to-use devices will greatly facilitate the fight against weeds.

weeder

It can be made from a board about 30 cm long and up to 10 cm wide. The board should be processed with a plane, the corners should be rounded and sanded. Then a few nails must be hammered into the board. Determine the quantity yourself. These will be the weeder teeth. The thickness of the handle should be made in such a way that it is comfortable to hold in your hands, and its length allows you not to bend over. The handle must be firmly fixed.

It is good to use a weeder for the destruction of weeds that have not yet risen.

Ripper

It can be made from old pitchforks. The teeth should be cut, leaving a length of 10 cm, straighten them and sharpen. Then you need to insert a long handle so that it is convenient to work without bending over.

Hoe

It will always come in handy: both after rain and after watering. It loosens the soil, while cutting the weeds. To work with wet ground, a lightweight hoe is more convenient. To do this, in the plane of the old hoe, you need to cut a hole in the shape of a rectangle. The earth will pass through the hole, which means less sticking to the work plane.

Manual cultivator

It is made from a durable sheet of metal. For manufacturing, cut out 4 strips 15 cm long and 3 cm wide, as well as a base bar (arbitrary size). Then bend them at a right angle and weld to the bar. On the reverse side, a holder should be fixed. The metal working part of the cultivator must be sharpened. You will get a lightweight cultivator that can loosen the ground and remove weeds.

Root remover

A root weeder can be made from a spade. His canvas must be cut on both sides, starting from the top, and narrowing to the bottom. This tool is very handy for deep cutting roots of bushes.

Success in the fight against weeds can be achieved only by applying comprehensive measures to destroy it. This is where special equipment can be of great help. Each device fulfills its purpose, so they should be selected individually, in accordance with the circumstances that have developed in your garden.

Dandelion is really capable of unbalancing any gardener-gardener - it is a perennial plant with a powerful root system, you can’t take it obliquely: cut off the stem, and dormant buds will wake up on the roots, which will give life to an even more powerful plant. It is very similar to the Lernean hydra from ancient Greek mythology - according to myths, instead of one severed head, three grew, and in order to defeat it, Hercules had to perform one of his famous feats.

On a note

It's hard to believe, but there are simple and natural ways permanently clear the lawn of dandelions. Pay attention to our tips - they will help you get rid of annoying dandelions without ruining the grass.

Dandelions (Taraxacum) belong to the Asteraceae family. There are many ways to useful application, but despite this, dandelions are commonly considered weeds around the world. For example, common dandelion (pharmacy) is listed as a poisonous plant.

Dandelion, a broad-leaved perennial, can grow in any soil. Its lanceolate leaves grow from 7 to 30 cm long and 1.5 to 6 cm wide. They always form a rosette just above the central tap root. Several flower stems can form in a rosette at the same time. By yellow or orange flowers, dandelion is easy to distinguish from other plants. As they mature, the flowers turn into downy balls. Light seeds are spread with a puff of wind, which is why the species is called "dandelion".

Easily adaptable to any soil and weather conditions, they grow all over the world, even in today's "disturbed" ecosystems - lawns or open spaces under the bright sun. It is difficult to get rid of them, because they feel good in the most adverse conditions. Dandelion seeds do not stay dormant for long and germinate quickly. In addition, seeds can be formed without cross-pollination (fertilization), that is, a dandelion can pollinate itself. All this contributes to an increase in the rate of plant reproduction.

It has long been noticed that the harder you try to breed dandelions, the faster they grow. They will grow again and again if not destroyed completely along with long, strong roots. Here are a few ways to kill this harmful weed, both organic and non-organic.

How to clean the lawn from dandelions

A sprouting dandelion pushes aside grasses and other plants in an attempt to make room for itself, and soon your plants begin to lack water and nutrients. To prevent this from happening, you need to destroy the weeds as soon as they begin to sprout. Each dandelion can form up to 15 thousand seeds that can survive in the soil for up to 6 years. Each seedling also forms 15 thousand seeds. This is how this hardy weed grows and spreads.

kill root

The best way to clear dandelions from your lawn is to pull it out with a taproot that grows into the soil to a depth of 60-90 cm. It is easiest to pull the weed from moist soil. The main root, from which the lateral ones extend, goes vertically down under the shoots. In autumn, when the shoots die off, the main root remains alive deep underground. In the spring, new shoots grow from these roots. That is why it is simply necessary to destroy the roots in order to get rid of the harmful dandelion.

Completely extracting the root by simply pulling on it will not work. You need to use a puller with a long handle, a Japanese hoe, an auger or a pedal puller. This should be done in the spring, as soon as the first seedlings appear.

Regular mowing

Periodic mowing will slow down the growth of dandelions once they have hatched. As you already know, dandelion flowers turn into white puffs with seeds. These seeds are easily dispersed by the wind. If you prevent the flowering of plants, then their spread will become less rapid.

Dense tall lawn

Mow the lawn so that the grass is slightly higher than usual (about 6-8 cm). Thick, tough lawn grass varieties will help you control dandelion growth. High stocking density and more high grass do not leave enough space for weeds and close them from sunlight.

That is, preventing the seeds from ripening and depriving them of necessary conditions for germination, you will be able to curb the growth of weeds. If only a few dandelions have settled on your lawn, then their growth can be slowed down simply by changing your care tactics.

garden weed tool

The bald patches of the lawn should be immediately sown with the grass that you would like to grow. Otherwise, even a small gap will be enough for fluffy and flying seeds to take root on it.

Selective herbicide

Since dandelion is a broadleaf plant, a special herbicide for broadleaf weeds must be used to get rid of it. These herbicides will kill dandelions without damaging your lawn. Don't forget to feed your grass with lawn fertilizer. Feeding will help the grass grow faster and fill in the places where you dug up the dandelions. Synthetic herbicides are best used only for chronic weed problems, otherwise use natural herbicides.

Broad Spectrum Herbicide

A non-selective herbicide, such as glyphosate (Roundup), will kill not only harmful weeds, but also all other plants with which it comes into contact. Before applying the herbicide, they must be carefully covered with plastic or cardboard. Broad spectrum herbicides can be used to control dandelions growing in flower beds or on paths to spot weeds. Both selective and non-selective herbicides are ineffective if the dandelions have already bloomed. Herbicides should be applied as soon as seedlings appear.

Pre-emergence herbicides

Applying pre-emergence herbicides in early spring prevents dandelion seeds from germinating. An herbicide must be applied before the seeds can germinate. These substances can affect grass growth to some extent, but it will soon recover.

Boiling water

Pour boiling water over the dandelion. You can repeat 3-4 times during the day. After a couple of days, the plants will wither and die.

Vinegar

The acetic acid will help kill the weed. Vinegar with a high acid content can be used as a herbicide. A table bite can be made more concentrated by evaporating it. The resulting liquid must be applied to the leaves or poured into the hole left from the pulled out dandelion. Vinegar is a non-selective herbicide and can damage the grass around you to some extent.

Hydrochloric acid

A little hydrochloric acid can be applied to dandelion leaves. Soon the leaves will turn brown and the plant will die.

Mulch and compost

Dandelion growth slows down if the soil is rich nutrients. Fertilization will allow weeds to come out faster.

Chickens or rabbits

If you have chickens or rabbits, you can easily get rid of dandelions without damaging your lawn. These animals love to eat dandelion leaves and will eat them as soon as they hatch.

Salt

Sprinkle a tablespoon of salt on the outlet where the weed grows and it will wither. Be careful not to kill your favorite plants.

Corn Gluten Meal

The yellow powder containing corn gluten acts as a natural pre-emergence herbicide and will prevent dandelion seeds from germinating. It must be applied to the soil 4-6 weeks before the weed shoots.

weed burner

If other means do not help, you can destroy dandelions with a special device for burning weeds.

Dandelion leaves can be added to salads and are rich in a variety of nutrients. A little bitter, they emphasize the taste of the salad. Wine is made from yellow dandelion flowers. They can also be added to a salad for flavor and color, and dandelion roots can be boiled and added to soup.

In herbal medicine, dandelion root is used to treat various diseases. The white milk that dandelion secretes is used to treat various skin diseases - it soothes irritated skin. Thus, instead of throwing away weeds, they can be put to good use.

If you are allergic to dandelion, do not eat it. Care should also be taken when weeding, as dandelion pollen can cause a skin reaction in people who are sensitive to it.

How to use a garden root remover?

Working in the garden is difficult, but necessary. Who likes to weed the beds? Perhaps there are some, but most summer residents are trying to make the task easier, to speed it up, by acquiring various garden tools to help. A root remover is a very important thing in the household, with its help you can even pull out thorns with long roots. We suggest that you first familiarize yourself with the more expensive root-cultivator, then we will move on to cheap models, which are also very easy to use.

Choice of cultivator-root remover

When deciding to purchase such an assistant, do not choose the cheapest tool created by an unfamiliar company. Read product reviews first before buying. The first thing a summer resident should consider is the functions that a garden cultivator can perform. Do not spare money and think about one that will plow the earth, and loosen it, and pull out the roots. Second, consultants always offer the most expensive item first. Look at the power, and if you don’t have a field, but a small summer cottage, then take the one that is less powerful, which means cheaper!

Features of the garden root cultivator

How nice it is to come to the garden, quickly finish all the planned tasks and spend the rest of the weekend by the fire, frying a well-deserved barbecue! With a root remover-cultivator, this is quite possible. Let's talk about the advantages of the unit.

  1. With this device, you can not only remove the roots, but also prepare holes for planting, plow the ground for planting, loosen stably. And all this without a shovel!
  2. You don’t have to wade from bed to bed all day in a bent state. With such a mechanism, you will work standing up, with almost no effort.
  3. All garden work is done several times faster, you have a lot of time and effort left.

Now we propose to learn how to use a garden root remover.

Instruction

There are many manufacturers of such units, but their use is no different.

It is necessary to install the device near the weeds, turn the handle so that the teeth of the nozzle stick into the soil and begin to loosen it, removing all the weeds along with the roots using a lifting mechanism. Reviews of such units say that they are able to remove all the grass, which is simply torn off by hand, and not pulled out with a spine.

The disadvantages of this miracle is that it is not suitable for weeding beds with "trifles". The device can pull out all the roots at the same time, so for such weeding it is necessary to use a conventional garden root remover.

Simple root remover

Everyone knows how difficult it is to dig out a firmly rooted dandelion from the ground or get rid of horseradish. Especially for weed control, a garden root remover was created. Of course, you can try and pick with a shovel, but still this tool is more convenient, simple and easy, it does not take much effort. The handle can be just wooden or metal with a rubber nozzle, which will allow you to hold the tool more firmly in your hand. The garden root remover is constantly in contact with wet soil, so you should choose one whose tip is made of durable stainless steel. There are reinforced root removers that require even less physical effort, so they are more popular than the simplest ones, and are not much more expensive.

Terms of Use

Many novice gardeners, looking at such a tool, may simply be confused. This weapon of women is especially frightening: an incomprehensible useless thing to use. In fact, using a garden root remover is very simple.

The tool has tendrils, it is necessary to press it into the ground next to the weed so that they are on the edges of the harmful plant. After that, you need to push the lever in the opposite direction to the root.

Weed remover with roots

The tendrils dig into the soil, hook the root as deeply as possible and take it out. That's all, you just have to transfer the plant to a pit with humus.

Reviews about the usual root remover

Many gardeners have already adopted a garden root remover. The reviews of all are only positive, especially pensioners and women who find it difficult to use a shovel like the tool. They write that it is very easy to use, especially after adapting. The grass began to grow less with the use of a root remover, it is necessary to weed less and less. They praise it for its convenience, they write that the device seems “clumsy” at first glance, but after trying it once, you understand how much simpler it is than a shovel!

Many wrote comments that they found another advantage of the tool - this is the absence of the need to treat the soil with chemicals from various weeds. This is also very harmful for cultural plantings, which can die. And if they grow up in poisoned soil, that is, they are already somehow scary.

In general, solid positive characteristics, no matter what the garden root remover is - mechanical or manual!

Homemade products for a summer residence - do it yourself

Dandelion is really capable of unbalancing any gardener-gardener - it is a perennial plant with a powerful root system, you can’t take it obliquely: cut off the stem, and dormant buds will wake up on the roots, which will give life to an even more powerful plant.

How to "uproot" dandelions from the lawn with a homemade bayonet

It is very similar to the Lernean hydra from ancient Greek mythology - according to myths, instead of one severed head, three grew, and in order to defeat it, Hercules had to perform one of his famous feats.

But since Hercules does not practice these days, you will have to rely on your own strength. There are special devices that help to completely extract the root of any weed and thus irrevocably deprive him of his life. You can do this manually, after watering the soil well, but you will have to spend a lot of time and effort. | Therefore, it is better to use the so-called root extractor. Let's consider a couple of industrial designs and, finally, a completely anti-crisis option.

One of the proprietary tools was developed by the German company GARDENA (Fig. 1).

It is especially good for gardeners who, for health reasons, find it difficult to weed while bent over - the tool has a length of 110 cm. The principle of operation is shown in rice. 2: stick the tip into the center of the weed, scroll and pull it out along with the plant.
For the second year I have been fighting dandelions on my suburban area, and while the score is not in my favor. Please advise some kind of device to pull out the roots of this "villain" to the end.

The device is expensive (from 3000 rubles), but those who have tried it say that it is worth it. However, there are more affordable Russian analogues(up to 1000 rubles), which are produced under the brands "Sibrtech", "Tornado" (Fig. 3).

If you do not have enough funds for such a purchase, there is a trouble-free anti-crisis option. Take a metal corner 0.5-1.5 m long (pick it up so that it is convenient for you to work), sharpen its edge at an angle and weld the handle on top so that you can grab it with both hands. You stick this corner into the ground next to the dandelion, drive it to a sufficient depth, turn and pull the plant along with the root.

When using any of the described tools, after removing the weed, a hole will remain in the ground. It must be immediately trampled down, and if the diameter is large, then sow the grass so that the wind does not cause seeds of new weeds.

On a note
In addition to mechanical weapons for weed control, chemical weapons have been developed and successfully used - these are selective herbicides (Agrokiller, Lontrel-zood), they destroy only broad-leaved weeds. The most popular is Lontrel Zood, created specifically for processing strawberry and lawn plantations. It is especially good against dandelions. Most herbicides are available in liquid concentrated form. They must be diluted with water according to the instructions on the packaging and sprayed from a sprayer on a large lawn. small plot it is better to water from a watering can with a small nozzle so as not to get into flower beds and beds.

The most common way to create lawns is by sowing grass seeds. It is often forgotten that sodding has a number of advantages over sowing seeds. Apparently, the most important advantage is the short time during which the plot area can be quickly covered with turf, even if the turf is not planted entirely, but at some distance from each other. An additional advantage of sodding is that it can be done at a time of the year when the main stress of gardening subsides, while sowing should be done in late summer or spring, when workers are busy with other jobs.

However, the cost of sodding is higher than sowing with grass seeds, not only because a unit of soddy area is more expensive than sown area. When sodding, there are usually additional costs for transport delivering sod if the place of its harvesting is at some distance from the site. But still, in many cases it is easier to create a lawn from sod than from grass seeds, since in this case the soil does not require such careful preparation and the sodding process is less complicated than sowing grasses.

It should be pointed out that very poor results are obtained from the use of sod containing grass species undesirable for lawns. When creating lawns on large areas, sodding is usually not used because of its high cost.

The main difficulty in creating a lawn from sod is the lack of good material for this, that is, the lack of a really good sod. Good lawn sod is extremely rare. It is very rare that the sod is not completely clogged with weeds. But when choosing a sod for transplanting, it is more important to pay attention to the types of grasses that form it, and not to the plants that clog it. It is not easy to carry out a botanical definition of herbs in a natural sod cover. Therefore, it is advisable to use pre-tested turf, in the herbage of which there are types of grass that are most suitable for lawns.

Under all conditions, before cutting the sod, it is recommended to care for it in order to improve its quality in natural growing conditions.

The first step in removing the sod is to cut it in parallel strips using sod cutters, including cutters that have a crescent shape. Then the strips are cut across, crosswise, into parts of the required dimensions, which are separated using special garden tools.

Weed control in the open field

The sod is cut in such a way that it is of the same thickness. It is best to remove the sod 5-7.5 cm thick, laying it in standard sod boxes. These boxes are small pillboxes that have three sides high enough to fill with sod. The chopped sod is placed in boxes with grass down, and on the reverse side, excess roots and earth are cut off with a knife sharpened on both sides. The thickness and size of the cut pieces of sod are determined by its strength. If the turf is not strong enough, it is cut into pieces of 30X30 cm, but most often it is cut into pieces of 30X90 cm and 30X60 cm.

Practical experience shows that the best result is achieved when using more thinly cut sod. Often the turf is cut to a thickness of 2.5-4 cm. Sometimes excellent results are obtained with a turf thickness of less than 1.5 cm.

The conclusions drawn in the practice of sod harvesting are confirmed by specially designed experiments. These experiments show that the root system of grasses develops better from a thinner sod than from a thick sod. For example, a turf about 2 cm thick after transplantation had a better developed root system of grasses than a turf about 7-8 cm thick. Experiments were carried out on transplanting well-fibred park turf.

Before laying, it is desirable to inspect and remove from each piece of sod, all weeds and their parts present in it, on a site prepared accordingly. With a small object, this work is carefully done by hand.

To cut the sod over large areas, special plows are used, although the work is not done as accurately as with the manual method. The sod is cut into long ribbons, which are then cut into pieces suitable for subsequent rolling into rolls. The plow cannot, of course, be used for cutting sod on uneven areas.

When creating ramparts or various kinds of embankments on sod areas, the sod is first removed with long ribbons and rolled up. At the end of the construction work, it is again laid in place.

After the turf is carefully prepared in even pieces of the same thickness, you can start laying it. If, under the prevailing conditions, the prepared turf cannot be immediately placed in the permanent place intended for it, then it should be evenly laid out, and the pieces rolled into rolls should be unrolled. If the sod is left in rolls or stacked in piles, it quickly loses color and deteriorates. Even with the onset of frost, when sodding work is postponed, the prepared sod will not be damaged if it is pre-spread.

Good results are obtained by fertilizing the soil, especially poor soil, on a plot prepared for turfing with bone meal or superphosphate at the rate of 68 g per 1 m 2.

Before laying the sod, it is important to make sure that the layout of the site is well done and fully completed. The area to be turfed is divided by pegs, which are installed at a distance of 3 m from each other. Sodding should start from one edge or corner and then be carried out over the entire area. The work is carried out in such a way that people are facing the non-turfed part of the site. Moreover, they must stand on the boards so as not to damage the edge of the freshly laid turf. The sod is laid in such a way that its pieces are alternating, like a tiled sidewalk or a brick wall. You should pay attention to the fact that the edges of the pieces of turf were laid tightly to each other.

It is often recommended to compact the turf after laying, but this is necessary if upper layer the soil was well prepared and the harvested sod had the same thickness. If individual swelling is noticeable in the laid sod, then they must be eliminated by removing the soil from the lower part of the sod. The use of rammers in such cases leads to uneven compaction of the soil.

Immediately after the sod is laid, the gaps between its pieces should be filled with sand or soil containing a large amount of sand. This technique facilitates the splicing of the side parts of individual pieces of sod. After completing this work, the areas should be rolled with a roller weighing about 100 kg, and then good compost should be applied to the surface of the sod.

If the turf rises after a frost or for some reason warps, it is necessary to reroll. If the laying of the sod was preceded by good soil preparation and coating (fertilizer) with bone meal or superphosphate, then it is very likely that in the first part of the season it will be necessary to mow and fertilize the sod cover with nitrogen fertilizer in the first part of the season.

A valuable maintenance measure is to cover the newly laid sod with compost. This helps to detect individual small depressions formed in the turf some time after laying. Compost is both fertilizer and mulch for lawn grasses.

Sodding of lawns and lawns in the conditions of England is carried out in winter, but it can be carried out almost all year round if artificial watering is possible in dry times. Usually, turfing is carried out between September and February. Good results are obtained with sodding no later than April. Later carrying out of these works is dangerous in dry weather.

Newly sod lawns during the first summer, especially on clay soils, are prone to tearing. To prevent this from happening, it is necessary to irrigate, as well as fill cracks with soil or humus. It is also useful to mulch the turf. During the spring, it is important to check for weeds in the sod. If there are few weeds, they are best removed by hand; and at in large numbers when the sod has grown together and strengthened well enough, apply herbicides.
