What garden plants can be grown on the windowsill. What can be grown on the windowsill in winter? Vegetables for growing in the winter at home

Growing vegetables indoors has its own characteristics.

In flower pots, the area of plant nutrition is sharply limited. There is also a constant lack of illumination.

Therefore, the key to successful growing vegetables in pots, in an apartment, is a high-quality earthen substrate, the presence of the sun (at least for 3-4 hours a day) and the presence of self-pollinating seeds. AT winter time supplementary illumination with fluorescent lamps (phytolamps) is required.

growing vegetables on the windowsill

Choose the time of planting vegetable seeds:

You can grow vegetables on the windowsill in the apartment all year round. Seeds can be planted at any time. Although there is an undesirable time for sowing seeds - from November to February, inclusive. In order for a seed to grow into a beautiful lush bush (the beauty of a bush is one of the goals of growing vegetables on a windowsill), during the first month of life, it needs sun and warmth for normal growth and development of a lush “hair”. Neither one nor the other is available in late autumn and winter. Therefore, it is desirable to plant seeds in such a way that before sunny cold days the bush has at least a month for the development and forcing of green mass. And this time is from March to August inclusive. Otherwise, the bushes will not please the eye. They will become "bald", "naked" and inconspicuous. In winter, additional lighting will be required (turning on the lamps for 5-6 hours in the evening) with ordinary fluorescent lamps to lengthen daylight hours.

When will the first harvest appear?
From the moment of planting to the appearance of the first fruits, it will take from 3 to 5 months. Much depends on the type of vegetable (there are early-ripening varieties, there are late-ripening ones).

But on average, the time from germination to the first harvest is as follows:

  • for tomatoes - 3-4 months;
  • for cucumbers and hot peppers - 2-3 months;
  • for sweet pepper - 4-5 months.

Choosing seeds:

Vegetable seeds for growing on the windowsill should be self-pollinating hybrids. From self-pollinated hybrids, we prefer small-fruited varieties, since large fruits sleep longer and worse.

For growing tomatoes on the windowsill, the height of the bush is important. Pay attention to the fact that the variety you have chosen is undersized (no one needs bushes two meters high in an apartment).

For growing cucumbers in an apartment, we prefer bush varieties. The variety must be self-pollinating. Bushes in pots are pinched after 3-4 true leaves and run on a trellis (support), 50-80 cm high.

When choosing seeds for sweet pepper (and hot pepper), we pay attention only to the search for self-pollinating hybrids. In other parameters, we are guided only by our taste - color, height of the bush, shape of the fruit, etc.

We prepare a high-quality substrate from coconut fiber and biohumus. To do this, mix 1 part of biohumus with 2 parts of coconut fiber.

Preparing containers for planting:

As containers for growing vegetables on the windowsill, we take ordinary flower pots:

  • for tomatoes, sweet peppers and cucumbers - 3-4 liters;
  • for hot pepper - 1.5-2 liter.

There are two ways to form an adult vegetable bush in a pot:

1. Sowing seeds for seedlings in small containers (disposable cups or peat tablets or peat cups) followed by picking (transplanting) them into large pots;

seedlings in peat tablets

2. Sowing seeds immediately into large pots.

The minimum volume of a pot for an adult tomato bush (as well as for a sweet pepper bush or a cucumber bush) is 3-4 liters, no less.

shoots of cucumbers in the apartment on the windowsill

For hot pepper, a 1.5-2 liter pot will be enough, since the hot pepper bush itself is smaller than the sweet pepper bush.

Preparing seeds for sowing:

We lower the seeds into a warm medium solution of potassium permanganate (not pink and not dark red) for 2-3 hours.

seed treatment before planting in a solution of potassium permanganate

Then we take them out (we take out only those seeds that have sunk to the bottom during this time, and those that have surfaced are thrown away, since the germination of such seeds is very low), onto a cotton pad (or a piece of cotton fabric), let it drain.

Planting seeds:

We fill small cups (when planting with a pick) with an earthen mixture, lightly tamping, while not filling up to the edges of 2 cm. Lay the seeds on top and cover with a substrate, crushing so that the height of the earth layer above the seeds was 1-1.5 cm, water.

planting seeds

We lay out 4-5 seeds in each cup. A week after germination, we thin out the seedlings, leaving 2 pieces of the most powerful and beautiful in each cup. And a week later we thin out a second time, leaving one of the strongest of the two seedlings.

tomato seedlings with cotyledon leaves

growing cucumbers on the windowsill, picking

When planting immediately in large pots (with a capacity of 2-4 liters), without picking, pour the earthen mixture, lightly tamping, not getting enough sleep to the edges of 4-5 cm. We also lay out the seeds (4-5 pieces each) and sprinkle with a layer of earth in 1- 1.5 cm. We will need the remaining depth to raise the ground level (instead of picking). In about a month, we will fill up the earth to the edges of the pot. This procedure will replace our picking. Seedlings also break through in several stages, until only one of 4-5 pieces remains - the most powerful.

We dive seedlings (when forming a vegetable bush in the first way) or add earthen mixture to the top of the pot (when forming a bush in the second way):

Approximately 3-4 weeks after germination, we transplant (dive) our small seedlings into large pots. We take the seedling in a small container, turn it upside down (you will have the top of the pot on your palm, and let the seedling itself between your fingers), gently pull the container (cup) up.

pick

And so in your hands was a seedling with a clod of soil shaped like a glass. Carefully insert it into the prepared large pot with pre-poured soil mixture and pour the soil mixture into the remaining empty space around the perimeter of the large pot. From above we sprinkle our seedling with soil to the cotyledon leaves.

picking peppers in a pot

Dive seedlings are abundantly watered already in large pots.

If we planted the seeds immediately in large pots, then at the same time (3-4 weeks after germination) we fill the pots with an earthen substrate to the top.

Watering and spraying seedlings:

atomizer

Bushes, throughout the year, water differently. In the first month of life, seedlings should be watered regularly, but moderately. At this stage, it is important not to overwater the seedlings, as there is a risk of various diseases(such as the black leg). In winter, you don't have to water them often, as there is little sun and heat. In winter, we adhere to the rule "it is better not to top up than to overfill." But from the end of March, moisture consumption will increase, and the sun will do its job with warmth. In the summer, especially if by this time fruits have begun to appear on the bushes, it is important not to let the potted soil dry out. Since the ovary and fruits on the bushes dramatically increase moisture consumption, in the hot summer we adhere to the rule "it is better to pour than not to add."

On warm and sunny days, do not forget to systematically spray the bushes, it is better to do this every evening.

vegetables on the windowsill in the apartment

We turn the bushes around its axis 1 time per day.

Seedlings and adult plants on the windowsill must be rotated 180 degrees around their axis once a day. A plant that receives light only from the side of a window tends to bend down towards the light. Therefore, so that your plants are not crooked, asymmetrical and ugly, do not forget to rotate them.

We feed our vegetable beds in pots:

fertilizer growth

Thanks to humus and pressed coconut flakes, your seedlings will grow strong and healthy, but in order to help them overcome such difficulties as lack of light, picking, limited feeding area, it is advisable to regularly fertilize with mineral or organo-mineral fertilizers during their growing season.

We carry out the first top dressing two weeks after picking, then every 2 weeks.

We alternate feeding. The first week we spray the seedlings with fertilizer (we cook according to the instructions), the second week we pour it under the root. ROST fertilizer (concentrate or universal) gives good results. They are sold in almost all stores.

ROST promotes survival, better rooting of seedlings, stimulates the growth of powerful green mass, increases yield by 15-40%. The fertilizer also has fungicidal activity.

The spring garden at home is a million in one: eco-style praised by the Scandinavians, saving on vitamins and entertainment for the whole family. They checked what can be easily grown on the windowsill, and what will have to be very confused; where to get by with improvised means, and where it is better not to save; which plants should be grown from seeds, and which ones should be grown from leftovers not included in the salad.

Devices

You can grow fresh herbs at home without any special tools at all, planting seeds in packing trays from under vegetables and herbs, yogurt cups or containers from Doshik. However, for beauty and style, it is better to purchase special pots or boxes - wide, but not deep. It is convenient if they are equipped with special lids to create a greenhouse effect, although this can be achieved by simply covering the pot with plastic wrap or packing it in a transparent bag from the nearest Magnit.

The same principle applies to tools - you can dig in the ground with improvised means, but why, if Fix Price asks only 50 rubles for a decent mini-shovel and rake? You will also need a spray gun or a watering can with a “rain” nozzle and a bottle for settling water - watering young greens with tap water is too cruel.

The most stylish pots and watering cans this spring were seen in, although their prices are not the most affordable (the Bittergurka watering can made of white eco-ceramics is 799 rubles, and this is already with a seasonal discount). Quite fashionable ones can also go broke on garden gadgets - hydroponic beds, aqua farms and mini-greenhouses - you can check the possibilities of technology, for example, at the link.

For soil it is better to go to the store. Dig up on the nearest lawn or grandmother's dacha is not an option, because the street land is full of not only weeds, but also insect larvae that have no place in the kitchen. It is ideal to buy special soil for homemade vegetables (30-50 rubles for a five-liter package), but if there is no such soil in the nearest store, the soil is also suitable for indoor plants. You can also spend money on drainage - expanded clay or special pebbles, or you can use crushed polystyrene foam or chopped corks from eight-March wine bottles.

Training

Having stocked up with everything you need, we choose a place for a garden. Experts recommend a kitchen window sill - it is more humid and warm there than in rooms. However, before trusting expert opinion, decide on a list of plants: some (basil, oregano, spinach) really love light and warmth, while others (marjoram, watercress) need shade and coolness. These can be planted on a glazed loggia.

We plant each type of greenery in its own pot - not only because of differences in care and climate, but also because most plants cannot stand close proximity to others. If there is not enough space, but you want to plant a lot, it is better to use hanging planters or racks.

We fill the bottom of the pots with drainage, and then lay out the soil. Its thickness depends on what we plant. Seeds can be soaked for several hours in a small amount of water - usually they are wrapped in cheesecloth and laid out in a saucer of water. The optimal moment for planting is when sprouts begin to hatch from the seeds.

Before planting, the soil is loosened, moistened, the seeds are planted to the desired depth, after which the soil is slightly tamped and watered again. Close with a lid or polyethylene until sprouts appear.

So that the plant does not grow crookedly, leaning towards the window, the “bed” must be rotated 180 degrees daily. An alternative for the lazy is to attach foil to the pot to reflect sunlight.

To use fertilizers or not, each gardener decides for himself. From effective and at the same time safe - ash, crushed banana peel, eggshell or yeast.

Starter level

Even a kindergartner can grow green onions, watercress or parsley on the windowsill. Planting watercress does not even require land: the seeds are placed in moistened cotton wool or paper towels. You can also do without a pot - a plate or a tray is enough. It is necessary to sow densely so that the plants support each other. Press the seeds into a damp substrate and place on a lighted windowsill. It is important to maintain humidity, but not flood. The salad does not like heat - the top temperature for it is 18 degrees. Harvest should be expected in 2-3 weeks. To renew seedlings, you can either plant new seeds every 3-4 days, or sow a new pallet every two weeks (this rule works for almost all plants that are grown from seeds).

Green onions can also be grown without soil. The bulb is placed in a glass of water so that only the root part is in the water. Change the water daily to avoid rotting. You can also transplant into the ground - after the roots appear. It is not necessary to deepen the bulbs entirely, you can plant them tightly - one to one. Also - through the roots and water - grow celery. They take as a basis not the root (which would seem logical), but the stump from the leaf. After the roots appear in the water, it is transplanted into a pot and wait a couple of weeks until new leaves appear.

Mint is grown directly from twigs bought in a store: they are placed in water, and after the roots appear, they are planted in a flower pot. Only regular watering is important.

Parsley can be grown from both roots and seeds. For the first method, we are looking for greens in a pot in supermarkets, cut off the leaves, and place the root in moist soil. The first shoots should appear in a few days. To grow not one bush, but a whole garden, we buy seeds. We plant them in peat cups or directly into the ground. The first harvest will appear only in a month and a half, but it will be updated throughout the whole year. Parsley loves light and water, but it is picky about temperature - it grows equally well on the kitchen windowsill and on an unheated balcony.

It is difficult to spoil the bed with dill. Seeds can not even be soaked - immediately planted in moist soil. The main requirement is to ensure frequent watering. The best variety for growing at home is Gribovsky.

Marjoram is also unpretentious - it survives on loggias even in winter and germinates well from seeds. It easily tolerates not only cold, but also a lack of light, but you still have to water it.

Level Explorer

Having dispersed "simple" plants, you can move on to more capricious ones. You don't have to do anything supernatural - just follow certain conditions.

Basil seeds are planted at a distance of 5-6 centimeters from each other, because otherwise the bushes that appear will be crowded, and the pots are placed in the warmest place in the kitchen, creating familiar conditions for the “Italian”. You can also grow it from cuttings by putting the twigs bought in the store into the water and subsequently transplanting them into the ground. Spinach and arugula seeds are not planted deep - otherwise there is a risk of not waiting for the harvest at all. These plants need both sun and abundant watering. For a long time - 3-4 weeks - oregano also sprouts. But here the abundance of water is only to the detriment: even a slight stagnation of liquid can lead to the death of the crop.

Leaf lettuce will be good only in moist air - in a dry and hot room, its leaves will become rough and bitter. Watering should be plentiful, but if poured, the roots will rot. But the plant tolerates the cold calmly - it will grow on a glazed balcony until late autumn. For home conditions, it is better to take the Lollo Rossa, Lollo Bionda, Red Credo, Odessa, Vitamin and New Year varieties. They can be grown from seeds, stalks or rhizomes left in pots from the supermarket.

Growing food in urban areas is popular all over the world. So, Britta Riley lives in a tiny apartment in New York. She came up with the hydroponic vertical garden. It takes up little space and brings a good harvest. About his innovation Britta.

In the West, if a product is labeled eco, bio or organic, it means two things. Firstly, these products are grown, harvested and processed in accordance with environmental standards, that is, without pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, growth stimulants and other “nasty things”. They have been certified, and serious organizations have guaranteed their quality. Secondly, bioproducts are much more expensive than conventional ones.

In Russia, the market for "clean food" is just emerging. The biocertification and control systems have not yet been formed. And the difference in prices between bio-products and ordinary vegetables and fruits sometimes reaches 1,000%! Therefore, for us, the most eco, bio and organic are products grown by our own hands.

But not everyone has dachas and relatives in the village. What should urban children do, who are used to seeing potatoes washed and in nets, and greens in vacuum packs? Grow vegetables and fruits right on the balcony or windowsill.

6 reasons to arrange a mini-garden at home

  1. You can treat yourself to fresh, vitamin-rich vegetables and herbs all year round.
  2. Saving. Vegetables and fruits are expensive, especially in winter. With a home garden, you no longer have to adjust to the season (we eat plenty of tomatoes only in July, and apples in September).
  3. You yourself can grow a plant from a tiny seed with your own hands, you can collect fruits. This is a creative activity that charges with positive energy.
  4. You can improve your knowledge of biology, gain useful skills and acquire an exciting hobby.
  5. Your children will see how tomatoes, cucumbers and other vegetables grow and will understand that they do not miraculously materialize in the refrigerator, their cultivation is serious work.
  6. You can surprise your friends and acquaintances. Imagine how you will brag about the harvest, showing the window "beds". ;)

What you need to grow vegetables and herbs at home

  • Place. Usually this is a window sill or balcony. It is better if they face the sunny side. If not, lamps for additional lighting will be required. If necessary, the window sill can be expanded or shelving for "beds" can be built (the minimum distance between the shelves is 50 cm).
  • Capacities. Clay or plastic pots, wooden boxes can serve as beds for a home garden. The main thing is that there are holes in the bottom for draining water. Containers are recommended to be placed on pallets.
  • Priming. There are many potting mixes for indoor gardens. As a rule, several layers are made: peat, compost, turf. You can prepare the soil yourself, or you can buy it in a specialized store.
  • seeds. Some varieties of tomatoes or cucumbers grow well at home, while others do not even sprout. Therefore, before you start indoor gardening, you need to sit on the forums, read articles on the Internet and find out which seeds to buy.

In addition, you may need fertilizer, top dressing, a thermometer and a vessel for settling water (home plants are watered room temperature separated from chlorine).

We have the inventory, now we need to decide what to plant. Lifehacker has already written about some vegetables that grow beautifully on the windowsill.

Today we will talk about ten more such plants.

Carrot

DenisNata/Depositphotos.com

Variety : "Amsterdam".
Temperature : 15 to 25 ºС.
Harvest : after ≈70 days.

For growing at home, you need to take miniature varieties of carrots. You can plant in boxes, pots or just cut plastic bottles with holes in the bottom. The soil should be taken drainage.

Seeds are placed in the ground to a depth of about 7 cm. When the carrots sprout and germinate a few centimeters, they need to be thinned out, leaving the strongest shoots at a distance of about 2 cm from each other. It is not recommended to keep the beds in direct sunlight.

You need to water carrots at home often, but you need to make sure that there is not too much moisture, otherwise the root crop will rot. From time to time, you can feed with fertilizers with a low nitrogen content (if there is a lot of it, all the growth will go to the tops). It is also very useful to occasionally loosen the soil.

Pepper

Peppers grown on the balcony

Varieties : "treasure island", "dwarf", "watercolor", "swallow" and others.
Temperature : 25 to 27 ºС.
Harvest : after 100-130 days.

Seeds are first planted in small pots, which are covered with cling film and placed in a warm place. When the first shoots appear (in one to two weeks), several small punctures need to be made in the film. After a while, the pepper will get stronger, then it can be transplanted into large pots or buckets. This must be done carefully so as not to damage the spine. The plant is rooted by a third, after which it is watered with warm (30 ºС) water.

In the future, pepper can be watered every day. This plant loves light, so white spectrum lamps are recommended in addition to natural light. It is necessary to protect home-grown peppers from drafts and direct sunlight.

You can fertilize with nitrogen fertilizers, but potassium salt and potassium chloride will destroy the roots of the plant. With proper care, pepper on the windowsill can delight with fruits for up to two years.

Cherry tomatoes

Levranii/Depositphotos.com

Varieties : "pygmy", "bonsai", "bead" and others.
Temperature : 23 to 25 ºС.
Harvest : after 90-100 days (depending on the variety).

The soil, as in the case of pepper, is more convenient to buy ready-made. It is recommended to take a cylindrical container: it is better filled with the root system.

First, the seeds are germinated in small pots: buried to a depth of 1.5 cm, covered with cling film and left in a warm place until the first sprouts. When the tomatoes have risen, they dive into a larger and deeper dish.

It is important that the plant receives uniform lighting. To do this, you can hang fluorescent lamps above the "beds" or regularly turn the containers to the window.

Watering should be done carefully: cherry tomatoes are easy to fill. When the plant grows, it is recommended to loosen the soil from time to time and feed it with mineral fertilizers. If necessary, the tomato stem can be tied to a support (wooden skewer or pencil). It is also important to ensure that pests do not appear on the tomatoes.

By the way, not only cherry tomatoes grow well in home gardens, but also ordinary tomatoes.

cucumbers

Cucumbers grown on the window

Varieties : “room Rytov”, “miracle on the window”, “ant” and others.
Temperature : 21 to 24 ºС.
Harvest : after 35-45 days.

For cucumbers, rather large containers are needed, with a volume of at least 6 liters. The soil should be loose, with peat or compost.

At home, self-pollinating varieties of cucumbers grow well. First you need to prepare the seeds: they are poured into a weak saline solution, those that have surfaced are thrown away. Then, suitable seeds are soaked for 20 minutes in a solution of potassium permanganate, after which they are washed on wet gauze and planted in the ground (under the film). When the seedlings sprout and grow up, they can be planted in large containers.

Water homemade cucumbers with warm water every day, but with caution. Leaves can also be sprayed with a spray bottle. Potassium nitrate is recommended as top dressing.

When the lashes of cucumbers form and grow, supports should be built for them so that the plant can trail.

Radish

homegrown radish

Varieties : "carmen", " white Fang”,“ Celeste F1 ”and others.
Temperature : 18 to 20 ºС.
Harvest : after ≈40 days.

It is recommended to plant radishes in wooden or clay containers, but you can also use ordinary ones. plastic cups. Loose, well-drained soil is needed. Seeds can be checked for germination before planting, like cucumbers. After that, they need to be buried to a depth of 1-3 cm.

After planting, the soil must be watered and covered with a film. When shoots appear, the "greenhouse" is removed. Radishes, as a rule, do not dive. But sometimes they put it for two or three days in a lower temperature regime- about 15 °C. This hardens the plant and contributes to a better harvest.

Five days after the appearance of the first shoots, organic top dressing is carried out, and two weeks later - mineral. Water the radish abundantly as it dries. It is also important that the air in the room where it grows is not dry.

Spinach

homemade spinach

Varieties : "virofle", "gaudry", "gigantic" and others.
Temperature : 15 ºС.
Harvest : after ≈40 days.

Spinach belongs to vegetable greens and is considered very useful. To grow it at home, you need containers 15-20 cm high. Ready-made soil mixtures can be used. The main thing is that peat is included in their composition.

It is recommended to soak the seeds in water for a day before planting. Sowing is carried out to a depth of 1–2 cm. To accelerate germination, containers can be covered with a film. Spinach germinates about a week after planting, then it can be dived.

In winter, when the heating is on in the apartment and when the daylight hours are short, it is recommended to illuminate the plant with lamps and spray it with a spray bottle (in addition to watering).

The crop can be harvested when the spinach reaches 7–10 cm in height.

Basil

jamdesign/depositphotos.com

Varieties : "Marquis", "lemon", "Baku" and others.
Temperature : from 22 to 24 °C.
Harvest : after 50-55 days.

Basil is one of the most fragrant and favorite spices. At the same time, it is quite unpretentious and grows well on the windowsill.

Basil is planted immediately in large containers (with a volume of at least 1.5 liters). First you need to prepare the soil for planting: pour twice with mineral fertilizers with an interval of five days. The seeds are deepened by 1–1.5 cm. Until the plant sprouts, it must be watered every two days. Further watering is carried out daily, preferably in the morning.

green garlic

fotomod/depositphotos.com

Varieties : "Kharkiv", "anniversary" and others.
Temperature : from 18 to 25 °C.
Harvest : after 15-20 days.

As a rule, garlic bulbs are used in cooking. But the green shoots (arrows) are also suitable for gastronomy: they are suitable for making marinades and sauces.

Varieties of garlic are divided into two groups: winter and spring. The latter usually do not give arrows, therefore they are not suitable for growing at home.

For those who have ever grown onions on a windowsill, garlic will not be difficult to deal with. You need to take winter-grade garlic cloves, preferably with sprouted sprouts. Any soil mixture can be taken. Each clove is planted to a depth of 2-3 cm and at a distance of 1-2 cm from each other. Once planted, be sure to water.

The container with garlic should be kept on the most lit window in the house. Water as the soil dries out. From time to time, you can feed with nitrogen-containing fertilizers.

Mint

martiapunts/Depositphotos.com

Temperature : 20 to 25 °C.
Harvest : after ≈60 days.

Mint has a fairly branched root system, so for planting it, you should take a deep and wide container. The soil is recommended to use peat, varieties - any.

There are two ways to plant mint: seeds and cuttings. The latter is shown in the video below.

To grow mint from seeds, you need to plant them in the ground to a depth of about 5 mm and water. To create a greenhouse effect, you can use a film. Before germination (about two weeks later), the ground should be sprinkled with water every day. After germination, mint must be planted.

Mint is unpretentious. In summer, it must be protected from direct sunlight, and in winter from lack of light and excessive watering. From time to time, the plant can be fed with organic mixtures.

Mature plants can reach a meter in height. As a rule, they have a lot of leaves - there will almost always be mint for tea or homemade mojito.

Strawberry

S.Bachstroem/Shutterstock.com

Varieties : "autumn fun", "home delicacy", "garland" and others.
Temperature : from 18 to 20 °C.
Harvest : after ≈30 days.

Ampel remontant varieties of strawberries are suitable for a home garden. They bear fruit all year round and are not too picky about light. Strawberries can be planted in any soil mixture. But first, drainage (expanded clay, small pebbles) should be poured to the bottom to protect strawberries from stagnant water.

Strawberries can be grown from seedlings or seeds. Both are sold in gardening stores.

Seeds are planted in small containers (for example, plastic glasses), watered abundantly and covered with cling film. After the appearance of the first shoots, the film is removed and the seedlings are placed in a well-lit place. When three or four leaves are formed, strawberries dive into larger containers.

This plant loves light. When days are shorter than nights, artificial lighting should be used. Watering and spraying are carried out as the soil dries. Strawberries are easy to fill.

Solutions with a significant iron content are used as top dressing. During active growth, strawberries become overgrown with mustaches, they need to be tied to supports.

As you can see, growing vegetables, herbs and even berries in a city apartment is not difficult and even exciting.
