Soap base is the main ingredient that no soap maker can do without. This is an almost finished soap, a kind of semi-finished product, in which you will need to add healthy oils, give it a pleasant smell and color. With the help of the base, you can create a unique product with a variety of properties.
The soap base consists of oils, glycerin and surfactants. It is the presence of the latter that frightens many consumers, but without it it is simply impossible to create high-quality soap that will foam well, take care of the skin and be stored for a long time. Addendum healthy oils, herbs and other ingredients will help neutralize the harmful effects of aggressive substances.
Where to get soap base
This personalized soap base product is great for skin care and a pleasure to use. But where to get the basis for homemade soap making?
The most time-consuming and difficult way is cooking from scratch. Soap base at home is not so easy to prepare, because it is a chemical process. Here you need caution and strict adherence to safety precautions, as well as good gloves, a respirator and goggles.
The second way is to use the services of a specialized online store and purchase a ready-made soap base. In order not to get lost in the variety of assortment of the soap shop, decide in advance on the type of base, oils and dyes.
Finally, the last, third path, which is followed by most beginner soap makers - cooking own soap from a product of industrial production, that is, an ordinary store-bought baby soap. This method does not require special costs, it is easy to buy soap, but it takes longer to work with it, and it already has its own aroma, albeit unobtrusive.
What is the basis
The soap base recipe differs depending on its type. You can divide semi-finished products by consistency and color into several types.
Liquid soap base is used to make shower gels, shampoos, bath foams. This base does not require remelting, easily absorbs oils and has a beneficial effect on the skin. The composition is easy to color, and it foams well.
The liquid base consists of water, derivatives of coconut and sunflower oils, glycerin and surfactants - lauryl betonin, benzyl alcohol, potassium kernelate, etc.
More attractive to people who prefer natural cosmetics, organic soap base. At its core, the maximum natural products: water, glycerin, derivative coconut oil- sodium palmate, sorbitol, cocoate, sodium chloride, etc.
The gentle composition and the minimum amount of surfactants allow the use of such soap from 3 years. The base has a neutral smell, which allows you to use any flavors, it does not dry the skin.
The creamy soap base is suitable for sensitive skin, it can be used to remove makeup and cleanse the face. The finished soap is stored in a jar and has the consistency of a cream, the foam is soft and dense. The base consists of water, glycerin, sodium laureth sulfate, sorbitol, sodium stearate, propylene glycol, etc. The base receives its tenderness and wonderful properties from almond oil, aloe vera gel, and vitamins.
The creamy base allows you to make scrubs and peels, the softest soap with gentle foam, decorations for hard soaps. It is added to other bases to improve quality. Does not require cooking, oils, dyes, abrasive are simply mixed into it.
Separately, you can highlight the base with goat's milk (5-10% milk in the composition), which has a calming effect and is suitable for children, and the olive base (up to 20% olive oil), which foams well and moisturizes the skin.
Transparent and white - what's the difference
As a rule, a white soap base differs from a transparent one in just one ingredient - titanium dioxide. The color of the base varies from milky white to beige, it is completely opaque. Some manufacturers make only a transparent base, relying on the soap makers themselves to add the desired dye.
The transparent variety is suitable for brightly patterned soap bars with rich colors. It is plastic, does not smell, 5-6 drops of oil are enough for aromatization. Due to the small amount of surfactant, it does not foam well.
You can’t do without a white base if you want to make puff soap. It is not as bright as transparent, foams better, has antistatic and air conditioning properties.
How to make your own soap base
The process of making soap base at home requires care, attention and precision. For work you will need:
- Household gloves to protect hands from lye.
- Safety goggles to protect your eyes.
- Respirator not to inhale harmful substances. In addition, the room must be well ventilated.
- A solution of vinegar or citric acid. If alkali gets on the skin, it should never be washed off with water. To do this, use an acid solution.
- Accurate scales up to 0.1 g.
- Submersible blender. The mixer will have to interfere with the mass for much longer.
- Glassware.
- Thermometer.
- Soap mold.
Before starting work, it is worth studying safety precautions in detail, choosing a recipe for the future basis. To make the composition, you will need oils, for example, coconut, palm, olive, lye and water. To accurately determine their number, you need to use an alkali calculator.
Wear protection before making soap. Then you should measure the right amount of oils and water. Accurately weighed alkali is carefully added to chilled or frozen water (water cannot be poured into alkali, the reaction will be too violent) and mixed. When the temperature of the solution of alkali and oils is the same, they are mixed with a blender until a thick homogeneous mass is added, additional ingredients are added - dyes, flavors, etc.
The resulting mass is wrapped and left in a warm place for a day. After that, the soap needs to mature. It can be cut and stored for at least 4 weeks, only after that it will be completely ready for use. Or go the fast route and heat in a water bath at a temperature of 90 degrees, without letting it boil, pour into molds and let it harden. This soap can be used the next day.
How to make soap from soap base
A beginner may be frightened by the complexity of making the base, but let's not forget that this ingredient can be purchased and immediately enjoy the creative moment - adding flavors, dyes, decorations, etc. Soap base soap recipes differ in composition, but the preparation process is the same everywhere.
What do we need to make soap with our own hands?
- Microwave or 2 saucepans for a water bath.
- Measuring cup.
- Wooden spatula or blender.
- Soap molds.
- Small spray bottle with alcohol.
Ingredients:
- Soap base.
- base oils.
- Essential oils or fragrances.
- Food or cosmetic dyes.
- Additional additives (honey, chocolate, herbs, ground apricot pits, etc.).
Cut the soap base into pieces and melt in a water bath or in the microwave. Boiling is not allowed! Add the coloring and mix slowly, avoiding the formation of bubbles. Now you can put the caring oil, additional additives into the basis. Allow the composition to cool slightly and add flavoring. In a hot mass, it can quickly evaporate. Pour the mixture into clean molds and let dry.

The two basic ingredients for soap making are baby soap and soap base. Baby soap is usually used by beginners in soap making, as it is the easiest and most affordable way to try your hand. Soap base is a much better material because it provides even more room for creativity and once you have mastered the "baby" soap making, you will certainly want to try making soap from a soap base.
There are two types of soap base: transparent (glycerine) and white matte (from coconut or palm oil, with the addition of titanium dioxide). The soap base is well suited for creating bright beautiful soap - it is easy and pleasant to experiment with it.
Making soap from a soap base is much easier than from a "children's" one.
Here are just some of the benefits of making soap from a soap base:
- The soap base does not need to be crushed or grated, just cut into pieces is enough.
- It melts easily, both in a water bath and in the microwave.
- It does not need to add water or other liquid.
- It is also not necessary to dry the soap after casting, as soon as the soap hardens, it can be used.
- The difference between soap from a soap base is that it is not necessary to add base oils to it. They can be added, but the amount should be no more than 1/3 tsp. per 100 gr. base, otherwise the soap will be too soft and will not harden. You can find a soap base, which already includes all the necessary moisturizing oils.
How to make soap from soap base:
- Put the pieces of the base in a melting container and melt the base in the microwave or in a water bath. Heat the base only until it melts. It is very important not to overheat it to more than 60-65 degrees. And under no circumstances bring the base to a boil.
- Now you can add dyes and fillers to the melted base. Remove from water bath.
- Add essential oils.
- Pour soap base into molds. In order to make it easier to get the finished soap out of the molds, you can definitely grease them with any vegetable oil.
- To make handmade soap last longer, wrap it in cling film or put it in a cardboard box. Before that, you need to let him "lie down" for several days.
it turns out softer than ordinary purchased soap and much more original and beautiful! You can make a two-color soap, from a transparent and matte base, you can add small flowers to the transparent base, you can pour coffee beans or herbs on the bottom of the mold! In general, experiment on health!
Beautiful, fragrant, natural, healthy handmade soap - what could be better? This soap is good in every way: healthier, cheaper, and more aesthetically pleasing.
Handmade soap is also a great gift that can be created for a specific person.
In every sense, homemade soap making is a positive, exciting, interesting and not particularly difficult process.
A bit of theory
It is known from the school chemistry course that soap is made from alkali and fat. Approximately 2.5 thousand years ago, the ancient Egyptians not only used soap, but also wrote down recipes for its preparation on clay tablets.
The modern process of making soap at home is much easier, it is not necessary for beginners to make soap from scratch.
Handmade soap: recipes, photos
The solid soap in question (and there is also, as we know, liquid soap) can be made by yourself using the so-called “base” and using the “hot” or “cold” cooking method.
Advice. To gain experience and fill your hand, it's easier to start with a soap base and a hot method.
A simple recipe for homemade soap using the hot method is available to all beginner soap makers. How to do and in what way? As a basis for your future soap masterpiece, use either a store-bought base or regular baby soap. It is advisable to take baby soap that is not colored, odorless - ideal if you decide to make cosmetic soap for washing your face.
Purchased base, as a rule, can be white or transparent. Transparent is used for cooking glycerin soap, it also turns out transparent. Beginners are advised to start soap making with an opaque base.
Tools and utensils
To create the simplest soap and dishes, you need ordinary. You will get a water bath using two saucepans - a larger one and a smaller one. An immersion blender, a measuring cup, a stirring spoon, an ordinary kitchen fine grater for vegetables will come in handy.
You may also need:
- scoop;
- sieve;
- plastic bags;
- syringe;
- alcohol thermometer;
- work dressing gown, apron;
- newspapers, paper towels.
Important! Dishes for soap making should remain so - it will no longer be possible to cook food in it!
The saucepan in which the soap is prepared must be made of stainless steel or enameled. Aluminum, copper, pans made of other metals will not work.
The raw material for making soap should fill your saucepan by at least 8 centimeters. But a particularly large amount of raw materials in the dishes is not needed. Make sure that the soap mass does not splatter when cooking or mixing with a blender.
To give shape to the future author's soap, take any molds, jars, trays- what is at hand. You can also use silicone confectionery molds and children's molds for sand cakes and even Lego elements. Do not limit your imagination, use whatever you see fit.
About safety
There are a lot of recipes for making soap on the Internet. Often, the authors do not pay the attention of users to what kind of soap - from scratch or on the basis - they will cook.
Read recipes carefully and pay attention to how soap is made.. This is important because making soap from lye and fat can be harmful to health. Safety precautions, no matter how it sounds, must be observed.
Also, when preparing ordinary soap in a water bath, so that air bubbles do not form, the soap poured into molds is sprayed with alcohol. Here, too, it is necessary to observe safety so as not to accidentally burn them. And, when preparing soap, cover, if possible, all surfaces with newspapers. Otherwise, soap splashes will have to be scrubbed with vinegar for a long time.
Types of soap that can be brewed
It is possible to prepare any soap, with any additives, components, soap for various purposes. Its composition, shape, color and smell will depend only on your imagination.
You can create:
- simple natural healthy baby soap;
- soap-peeling, scrub;
- soap-shampoo;
- shaving soap;
- soap for beard and mustache;
- beer and wine;
- with seaweed;
- medicinal tar;
- dressing fruit and vegetable;
- many other types of homemade hand-made detergent.
Soap for babies
It is commonly referred to as Castilian, or Castilla. Cooked as “zero”, or taken with a base of baby soap, as well as with a standard base, adding olive oil, chamomile decoction. You can add shea butter or tea tree oil.
For children, do not put herbs in soap. And decoctions are brought in the form of herbal tea bags or in gauze bags, “rinsing out” the bag in an almost finished soapy mass.
Also, essential oils and fragrances do not go into this soap.
Soap peeling
Use it to eliminate dead cells exclusively on intact skin. It is possible to add ground grains, seeds, various herbs, honey, clay, crushed coffee beans and even sea sand. It is recommended to add no more than a teaspoon per 0.5 kg of base soap.
Loofah is used as a scrub(natural washcloth). This soap looks very impressive and works effectively.
Remember! When entering the loofah into the soap, it should not be wet!
Shampoo soap
It is known that soap cannot properly wash hair. But this does not apply to homemade soap.
For it, oils with improved foaming are used. They do not leave a film, do not dry the skin, and have a beneficial effect on the hair.
The basic oil components in such homemade soap are castor, coconut, olive.
It is also possible to use the following types of oils, which are introduced at the end of the melting of the soap mass:
Oil type | Hair type | ||
fatty | Dry | Thin | |
Burdock (soflora). Washes well. But it can make a bar of soap not solid. | + | +
Olive. Nourishes hair well. | +
Coconut. Has a good cleaning effect. On dry hair, shampoo soap with coconut oil is used sparingly. | + | +
Castor. Excellent foam. Usually soap based on it ripens for several months. But you can use it after 4-6 weeks of ripening. | +
Sunflower. Rich in vitamin E. Washes off well. | + | + | + |
Grape seeds. Leaves no film. | + | + |
Shaving soap
Suitable for men and women. When cooking, add 1 - 2 tablespoons of glycerin to the thickening soap. It softens the vegetation, making it easier to shave.
As one of the main oils take:
- olive;
- coconut oil;
- Palm;
- sunflower oil;
- castor;
- almond oil;
- avocado.
The last two have a caring effect. Pouring such soap into molds, they are filled by 2/3, leaving room for foam.
Important! When cooking soap for a beard and mustache, an increased content of wax is introduced into it. Soap with wax allows you to shape a mustache or beard, wax fixes the desired shape.
Wine or beer soap
Alcohol - beer, wine and even champagne are also appropriate in homemade soaps. Before entering the mass, alcohol is boiled so that its vapors evaporate. When making soap, use large containers, as the mass with wine or beer may foam. Usually such soap is brewed from scratch, adding drinks as a liquid component.
In the finished soap, you can hear a slight smell of beer. Wine in color and smell is felt weakly. The color of wine soap is brown. For a red tint, dyes are used.
Seaweed soap
Algae can be found in specialized stores.
They are added in crushed form and dry in a thickening soap base. It is also possible to add sand. The finished product has a slight smell of algae.
Tar soap
Ready factory tar can be used as a base. To enhance and improve the smell, juniper and various coniferous essential oils are usually added. However, they appear weakly due to the smell of tar.When cooking soap, essential oil is introduced into a ready-made, slightly cooled mass.
It is recommended to cook soap with similar components from scratch, using the main components in the form of caustic soda (alkali) and some kind of fat. In this case, each of the vegetable or fruit additives will not spoil, but only improve your soap, giving it its own color, smell or useful qualities. Thanks to high level pH in fresh soap this component, it will play the role of preservatives for plant elements.
When cooking soap using a ready-made base, which is more convenient for beginners, adding fruit and vegetable components will not give the desired result. It does not matter how long, for example, tangerine slices will dry. By introducing them into the soap mass during cooking, after a while, already in the finished bar of soap, such a component will be covered with unwanted mold. Soap will be spoiled, its positive effect is zero.
Making soap from the base for beginner soap makers
Fascinating homemade soap making is a certain technological process that has to be mastered at the initial stage.
It will require:
- soap base (base);
- basic essential and cosmetic oils;
- dyes and flavors;
- molds for soap;
- hydrolates (floral waters);
- scales with the smallest division value;
- thermometer, kitchen whisk or stirring sticks.
Foundation preparation
- Weigh - exactly according to the recipe - the desired amount of soap base.
- Grind the base by cutting with a knife or grating.
- Dissolve the base in a water bath or in the microwave. Do not allow the base to boil. The temperature of the main soap mass should be no higher than 60 - 65 degrees. Use a thermometer.
- The base should dissolve well, “bloom”. Use a stirring spoon, stick, whisk, or mixer.
Introduction of additional components
Remember that citrus smells disappear especially quickly from the bouquet. More persistent - lavender, mint, ylang, benzoin, bay. The aroma of patchouli is well heard and retained.
Mint, lavender, lemongrass are suitable for herbal soap. In shampoo, it is good to use bay, ylang essential oil.
Final stage
After the introduction of all the necessary ingredients into the composition, the soap making process is considered complete. The soap mass is poured into prepared molds.
Regardless of the origin of the mold, it is recommended to line the inside with a cellophane film. A regular package will do.
Remember: to remove air bubbles on the surface of the finished soap, it is sprayed with alcohol from a spray bottle. Cellophane in the form - before placing soap in it - is also sprinkled with alcohol.
At room temperature, the soap is left to ripen for a day. If after that it is not possible to remove the product from the mold painlessly, the molds can be wetted with a stream of warm water, the pieces of soap should come out.
If this does not help, cool the finished soap to room temperature and put it in the freezer for a few hours. The soap will come out of the mold well. If the piece is large, after removing it from the mold, it is better to cut it, so it will ripen faster.
After two to three days, your soap will be completely ready for use.

Video
Watch an interesting video below - this is a small master class on making two types of handmade soap:
Find a good soap base. You can purchase the base from hobby and craft stores and modify it to your liking using a recipe found in soap making books. Use this recipe to make a list of all the required ingredients.
Prepare your workspace. You need a free area of the countertop or table, as well as all the necessary tools.
cut the soap base into pieces and place in a container. Measure out as much soap as you think will fit in your mold - 5 grams more / less will not play a role. Make sure your knife, cutting board and bowl are clean- soap will easily absorb debris, and then it will not be easy to remove it.
Melt the soap base. Pour the soap bars into a microwave-safe bowl and cover with cling film. Heat for a minute and then remove to stir. The mass will be thick and with lumps. Repeat the procedure further for 30 seconds at a time (stirring after each time) until the mass is homogeneous and without lumps. Warning: when the soap base is completely melted, it will be very hot. Try not to overheat the soap, otherwise it will have an unpleasant smell. The ideal temperature for melting is about 48-52 degrees.
Add fragrance or essential oil. For best results, wait until the soap has cooled down a bit before adding the fragrance - this way you are guaranteed to get a strong smell in the final product. If you are using a smaller amount of fragrance, use a thermometer and wait until the temperature of the soap drops to 55-60 degrees. A suitable proportion is 7 grams for every 200 grams of soap. This step is optional - sometimes sensitive skin fragrance may cause irritation.
Add dye to soap base. This step is also optional - some like colored soap, some don't. Do not use food coloring or candle dye as it may stick to the skin. Use a pigment specifically made for handmade soap, which is also available from hobby and craft stores or online. Do not forget that soap dye is much weaker, so you need to put it more than in a similar situation with candle dye.
Stir the melted soap - do not stir too much strongly, otherwise bubbles will form in the soap. If bubbles still appear, just spray the soap with alcohol from a fine spray bottle. The bubbles will disappear in a moment.
Pour soap into molds. Pour slowly so that bubbles do not form in the soap. After pouring the soap into the mold, sprinkle it finally with alcohol - so your soap will be perfectly smooth. After that, you can cover the soap with cling film and leave it on the table, or put it in the refrigerator. However, smoother soap will be obtained if it is not covered. The soap will take about an hour to set in the refrigerator and two hours on the counter. As it cools in the refrigerator, the soap will lose some of its fragrance. Don't put soap in the freezer.
And here is the recipe for scrub soap with herbs. This soap is also brewed on a base, although it is an ordinary baby soap, but nothing prevents you from taking a real base that is neutral in smell and color.To make soap at home you will need:
Grater
- Bowl
- olive oil
- children's soap (although special soap bases for handmade soap are sold, but it is quite possible to get by with children's soap)
- any medicinal plant(dry) - nettle, string, and there may also be crushed rose petals, sifted bran, etc.
- natural essential oil (to your taste)
- two saucepans
- molds for soapThe soap making process is simple.
We make a water bath: we take two pots - one large, the other smaller, pour water into a large pot, put a small pot in it and heat it.
At this time, three baby soap on a fine grater, and the finer, the faster it will melt. Once the water in the saucepan is hot, pour the olive oil into a small saucepan. For 100 g of soap there are 2 tbsp. spoons of oil, if you pour more oil, the soap will become soft like plasticine, so do not overdo it.
Pour soap crumbs into the heated oil, add hot water 150-200 ml and mix everything well. The mixture should be like dough for pancakes, if it turns out very thick, add more water, cover the pan with a lid and let it steam.
Grind the dry grass in a coffee grinder, add to the mass and mix.
We take molds and grease them with natural essential oil. Firstly, then it is easier to remove the soap, and secondly, the smell is pleasant. Pour the hot mixture into molds and leave for 4-5 hours, after which we take it out and dry it for about a week.
The skin after using this soap is very tender and velvety, because the product is natural.
Also, after falling asleep chopped grass or bran, you can add natural essential oil directly to the mass by diluting it with the base. As a base, you can use 3-6 ml of almond oil, olive oil, cream. Add aromatic oil - about 3-5 drops per mass pan (well, depending on what kind of pan you have).
The following essential oils can be added to the soap: Patchouli, Ylang-Ylang, Rosemary, Rose oil, essential oils Cedar or pine. They have a mild calming effect in addition to a bunch of healing and cosmetic properties.
Color molds and ingredients in soap making processes can be completely different. It all depends on your imagination and creativity.
Happy soap making!
