The poet Tarkovsky, a famous Russian translator from oriental languages, was a representative of the classical style in literature. Father of the famous director Andrei Tarkovsky. In 1989 he was posthumously awarded the USSR State Prize.

Genealogy of the poet

There are two versions regarding the genealogy of the poet Tarkovsky, each of which contains historical sources, family legends and statements by the hero of our article himself.

The first version is Polish. It was presented as fully as possible in the book by Tarkovsky’s daughter Marina “Fragments of the Mirror.” She claims to have seen her family tree as a child. It was drawn in ink on parchment. Then only the 1803 charter in Polish remained, which confirmed the noble privileges of Major Matvey Tarkovsky.

From this letter it followed that the Tarkovsky family was from Poland. And the grandfather and great-grandfather of the poet Tarkovsky were military men and lived on the territory of Ukraine.

There is also a Kumyk version, which became popular after the first trip of the poet Arseny Tarkovsky to Dagestan in 1938. Later, he repeatedly pointed out his origins from the Shamkhals, and was even proud of his Dagestan ancestors. Marina Tarkovskaya confirms that there was such a version of the origin of their family in the family. However, none of these versions is supported by documents, so it is not possible to establish the truth.

Childhood and youth

The future poet Tarkovsky was born in the Kherson province in 1907. As a child, together with my father and brother, I went to poetry evenings when metropolitan celebrities came. Young Arseny saw with his own eyes Konstantin Balmont, Igor Severyanin, Fyodor Sologub.

In 1919, during the Civil War, the family remained in Ukraine. The lives of Arseny and his older brother were in the balance. They were detained because Valery threw a bomb at Atamansha Maruska Nikiforova, an ally of Nestor Makhno, leader of the Ukrainian anarchists. Then the Tarkovskys were released, but Valery was soon killed. He died in battle against Ataman Grigoriev in the same year.

When Soviet power was established in Ukraine, relations with it with the poet Tarkovsky, whose biography is presented in this article, did not immediately work out. In the newspaper, he and his friends published an acrostic poem, the first letters of which formed an unflattering description of Lenin. They were arrested, but Arseny managed to escape from the train. He wandered for a long time, trying many professions. He worked in a fishing cooperative and was a shoemaker. According to some reports, by 1925 he graduated from a vocational school and went to Moscow.

Tarkovsky in Moscow

The hero of our article arrived in the capital in 1923. He moved in with his paternal aunt. In 1925 he entered the Higher Literary Courses. There he met the poet Shengeli, who in the future became his best friend.

Maria Vishnyakova, who three years later became his wife, also entered with him. But I failed to complete the courses. In 1929, they were closed due to the suicide of one of the students; failed graduates were not allowed to take exams at Moscow State University.

First poems

As the poet Tarkovsky himself stated, he began writing poems from early childhood. He managed to publish for the first time only in 1927. The 4-verse "Candle" was published in the collection "Two Dawns", and the following year the poem "Bread" appeared in the magazine "Spotlight".

Until 1929, he worked at the same time for the newspaper "Gudok", wrote poetic fables and feuilletons, and judicial essays. Published under the pseudonym Taras Podkova. Since 1931 he began to collaborate with the All-Union Radio. At the request of the literary and artistic department, he even wrote a production play, “Glass.” To get acquainted with the glass company, I made a special trip to the plant in Nizhny Novgorod. The production premiered in 1932, but Tarkovsky was criticized for using mysticism as a literary device.

Translator's work

The hero of our article began to engage in literary translations in 1933. Basically, these are works of national poets, in order to get to know them better, Arseny Tarkovsky goes on creative trips to Crimea, Kyrgyzstan, and the Caucasus.

In 1936, the poet met the wife of literary critic Trenin, Antonina Bokhonova, and left his family for her sake. By that time, he already had two children - Andrei, born in 1932, and Marina, who was two years younger.

In 1939, with Bokhonova and her daughter Elena, they lived in Chechnya, where Tarkovsky translated poems by local poets. Returning to Leningrad, he falls ill with diphtheria. He has been undergoing treatment for a long time in the infectious diseases department of the Botkin Hospital.

In 1940 he was accepted into the USSR Writers' Union. In the same year, he officially filed for divorce and married Bokhonova.

During the war years

When the war began, Tarkovsky accompanied both his families to evacuation, and he himself underwent military training. But according to the conclusion of the medical commission, he is denied mobilization.

Then he organizes for Muscovites, and on October 16 he leaves the capital with his mother for Chistopol. There Tarkovsky reunites with his family and writes his famous cycle “The Chistopol Notebook”. At the same time, he continues to write applications asking to be sent to the front. Finally, on January 3, 1942, he was enrolled in the newspaper "Combat Alert".

Almost every day he is sent to the front line to collect information, his partner dies, Tarkovsky himself takes part in battles more than once. In April 1943 he was awarded the Order of the Red Star.

In December, near Vitebsk, he was wounded in the leg. In the hospital he develops gas gangrene. His wife brings him to Moscow to see Professor Vishnevsky, who performs the sixth amputation. He left the hospital in 1944, his second wife selflessly caring for him.

"Silence of the Muse"

In 1945, Tarkovsky published a book of poems, “The Silence of the Muse,” but due to the fact that it did not contain a single poem praising Stalin, and only one mentioned Lenin, the book’s printing was stopped after the famous Decree “On Zvezda Magazines.” and "Leningrad".

The year 1946 becomes one of the most important in his biography. Tarkovsky meets Akhmatova, they remain friends until the end of their lives. Soon he decides to part with Bokhonova, who saved his life during the war by coming to the front. He translates Turkmen poets, but cannot publish his poems, which becomes a difficult test for him.

In 1951, the hero of our article officially married Tatyana Ozerskaya, who had been accompanying him on business trips for several years. That same year, his second wife died after a serious illness.

Tarkovsky still does a lot of translations, but writes his poems for the table.

Release of the first book

For the first time, a book of poems by Arseny Tarkovsky was published only with the onset of the “thaw”. The collection "Before the Snow" was published in 1962, when the poet was 55 years old.

In the 60s, he published two more books - “Earthly - Earthly” and “Messenger”. Tarkovsky's poems are becoming popular and beloved by many. He even has the opportunity to travel abroad - to England and France.

Akhmatova's death in 1966 turns into a personal tragedy for him. He accompanies her coffin and speaks at the civil funeral service. He dedicates a cycle of his poems to Akhmatova.

"Magic Mountains"

In 1978, Tarkovsky published the book “Magic Mountains” at the Merani publishing house, which includes his translations of Georgian poets and original poems. In subsequent years, the poet Tarkovsky worked on the collections “Winter Day”, “Favorites” and “Poems of Different Years”. Of this list, the most important is the book "Favorites", which also includes his poems.

In the spring of 1982, his son went to Italy to work on the film Nostalgia. Two years later, he holds a press conference in Milan, at which he announces that he will not return to the Soviet Union. Arseny respected his son’s civic position, but in a letter to him he stated that he was convinced of the need for a Russian artist to live and work in his homeland, together with his people enduring all the hardships and sorrows that befall him.

The hero of our article is having a hard time being separated from his son; Andrei’s death in December 1986 was a terrible blow. After this, his illness began to develop rapidly.

The Secretariat of the Soviet Union of Cinematographers is working to ensure that the name of Andrei Tarkovsky returns to his homeland. This also removes disgrace from his father. At the age of 80, he was even awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor. In the same year, the collections “Be Yourself” and “From Youth to Old Age” were published. He no longer participates in their preparation, as he physically feels extremely bad.

Death of Tarkovsky

Tarkovsky spent the last years of his life in the House of Cinema Veterans. By November 1988, his condition deteriorated so much that he was urgently transferred for treatment to the Central Clinical Hospital of Moscow. Already in the hospital, he learns that he has been awarded the Order of the Patriotic War, first degree.

In 1989, another book by the poet, “Star over Aragats,” was published. This became his last lifetime publication.

Late in the evening of May 27, 1989, Arseny Tarkovsky dies in hospital after a long illness. To bid farewell to him, the Great Hall in the Central House of Writers was provided. On June 1, the funeral took place in Peredelkino. Previously, the poet was buried in the Church of the Transfiguration of the Lord. Arseny Tarkovsky was 81 years old.

At the end of 1989, he was posthumously awarded the USSR State Prize for a collection of poems entitled “From Youth to Old Age.”

Another important publication, which, however, was published after the poet’s death, is the collection “Blessed Light.” Its appearance was initiated by the publisher from St. Petersburg Vadim Nazarov in 1993. It contained a preface by Yuri Kublanovsky, in which he talks about the work and life of the poet. Among the compilers was his daughter Marina Tarkovskaya.

Tarkovsky's poems are heard in many of his son's films. In particular, in “Mirror”, “Nostalgia”, “Stalker”. In Vyacheslav Amirkhanyan's documentaries "In the Middle of the World" and "Little Life" the author's poems are performed.

“So the summer has passed, as if it never happened.

Few people know that in her legendary hit she performed poems by Arseny Tarkovsky. The poet's daughter is sure that if her father had written a couple of poems about the party, his collections would have been published much earlier. But, an aristocrat in spirit, he did not serve the system and received recognition only at the age of 55.

Childhood and youth

Arseny Tarkovsky was born on June 25, 1907 in Elisavetgrad (now the city of Kropyvnytskyi, Ukraine). Mom Maria Danilovna was born Romanian and worked as a teacher. Father Alexander Karlovich served in the Public Bank. For organizing a populist circle, the man was exiled to Eastern Siberia for five years, where he began to engage in journalism. Upon his return, he wrote for local and Odessa newspapers.

Arseny had an older brother, Valery, in 1919 he died in battle against Ataman Grigoriev. Poetry was close to the boy since childhood: with his father they attended creative evenings and other authors of the Silver Age. In 1925, after graduating from a seven-year school, Arseny went to Moscow and entered the Higher Literary Courses, which he graduated in 1929.

Literature

Since the late 1920s, Tarkovsky has been writing articles for the newspaper Gudok and poetic feuilletons for the magazine Spotlight. In 1933 he began to engage in translation activities, and a year later the first books of translations were published.

In 1940, at a meeting of the Presidium of the Union of Soviet Writers, Mark Tarlovsky proposed to include Tarkovsky in the Union for translations of Kyrgyz and Turkmen poetry and Georgian folk songs. The decision was made positively.


The beginning of the war found Arseny in Moscow: he sent his first wife and children to be evacuated to the Ivanovo region, and his second to the city of Chistopol. At the end of October 1941, he himself went to Tatarstan, where he created a cycle of poems, “The Chistopol Notebook.” At the same time, he writes to the Presidium of the Writers' Union with requests to take him to the front. Since January 1942, he was assigned to the post of writer for the army newspaper “Combat Alert”.

The poet took part in hostilities more than once, managed to write poems glorifying the feat of the Soviet army, and fables ridiculing the Nazis. Soldiers cut out poems from newspapers and carried them in their breast pockets along with documents and photos of loved ones - they were so popular in difficult years. In 1943, he was wounded in the leg and had to have it amputated due to gas gangrene.

Tarkovsky failed to publish his first collection: he refused to include political poems in it. The first book, “Before the Snow,” was published only in 1962, two more – in 1966 and 1969. Tarkovsky began to be invited to perform at popular poetry evenings. In 1978, the Georgian publishing house “Merani” published another book, “Magic Mountains,” where, in addition to original poems, readers are offered translations of Georgian poets written by Tarkovsky.

The last lifetime publication was the book “Stars over Aragats”, published in 1988. In total, 12 collections of Tarkovsky’s poems and 1 three-volume collected works were published. Arseny's work occupies a unique place in Russian poetry. He managed to convey to the reader, under the conditions of a strict aesthetic dictatorship, the traditions of the Silver Age, giving them an individual modern touch.


In March 1982, the son went to Italy to film the film “Nostalgia”. A few months later, at a press conference in Milan, he stated that he had no plans to return to the USSR. Tarkovsky Sr. accepted his civic position, but in his letters he expressed the opinion that “a Russian artist should live and work in his homeland.”

Personal life

Maria Gustavovna Falz is considered the poet’s first youthful love - the poem “First Date” was dedicated to her. The woman, the widow of an officer, lived in Elisavetgrad and was much older than Tarkovsky. Maria Gustavovna was a muse for Arseny, he wrote poems to her throughout his life. But a serious relationship with Falz did not work out.


The biography of Arseny Tarkovsky includes three official marriages. He married for the first time in 1928 to classmate Maria Ivanovna Vishnyakova. The marriage produces two children - Andrei and Marina. Arseny's son will become a great film director and screenwriter, his daughter will become a writer.

In 1937, the father of two children left the family for Antonina Aleksandrovna Bokhonova. Officially, the divorce and new marriage were registered only in 1940. Biographers see a banal reason for the breakup of the first marriage: children. They required time, attention, care. And the poet needed love, silence and peace for creativity.


In addition, son Andrei recalled that his mother was “a nihilist at home”: there were not even curtains on the windows in the house. A woman’s spiritual life was more important. Apparently, Tarkovsky Sr. wanted peace and a homely atmosphere.

Tarkovsky literally owes his life to his second wife. It was she who took him from the front to the capital and achieved the reamputation of his wounded leg from the famous professor Vishnevsky. There were no common children in the marriage; Antonina’s daughter did not love her stepfather. Arseny's friends recall that Bokhonova was kind, beautiful and gentle. And Tarkovsky needed a powerful woman who could channel his creative soul into his work.


In 1947, the poet left Antonina, but filed for divorce only in December 1950. On January 26, 1951, he remarried Tatyana Alekseevna Ozerskaya. The woman, by Soviet standards, was a wealthy person; she made her living by translating popular novels from English. For example, her version of Gone with the Wind was a huge success.

It is striking that he was in no hurry to divorce a single woman before building a new relationship. It was as if he left hope for both: for one, that which would return, for the other, that which would come.

Death

In the last years of his life, Tarkovsky often visited the House of Cinema Veterans. In November 1988, his condition worsened sharply, and the poet was sent to the Central Clinical Hospital for treatment. Arseny Alexandrovich died on May 27, 1989, the cause of death was old age.


They said goodbye to Tarkovsky in the Great Hall of the Central House of Writers and buried them in the cemetery in Peredelkino. A few months after his death, Arseny Tarkovsky was posthumously awarded the USSR State Prize.

It is striking that when leaving his previous family, Tarkovsky was in no hurry to formalize
divorce his former wife and marry a new one. He seemed to have given up hope
one woman, while introducing a probationary period for another.
In addition, Tarkovsky, when leaving his family, never left just like that, to nowhere,
(fell out of love and left), he always leaves for something prepared in advance,
(I almost wrote, heated), place.
All biographers write about his beauty, aura and energy, that people fell in love with him

he needs silence, he needs peace. He wants to create...
In addition, in the memoirs of Andrei Tarkovsky, I found such a remarkable phrase,
“And our mother was a nihilist in everyday life: she didn’t need anything - not even curtains on the windows.
She was out of everyday life. She represented a special type of woman, formed in the 20s,
for whom the most important thing was spiritual life, and everything else was considered philistine.”
I think this is the main reason for leaving his first wife,

Tarkovsky left Antonina Alexandrovna in 1947, and this despite the fact that

Oleg Nikolaevich Pisarzhevsky, a writer and publicist, said this most accurately,
“Women's beauty is a relative concept, but breed is indisputable. In Thane

Tarkovsky has few such poems.
