Is it possible to apply hydrolat on cosmetics. What are hydrolats? Hair hydrosols

Natural ingredients are always superior to those that are artificial in nature. By adding various extracts, essential oils, extracts to cosmetics and personal care products, the manufacturer cannot always guarantee a positive effect from its use. A new step in the search for natural ingredients that can not only provide a wonderful aroma to a cosmetic product, but also make it useful, are hydrolates.

What is a hydrolat?

In the people, hydrosols are called differently. Most often - flower water, fragrant (aromatic) water. But it is difficult to call a hydrolat just odorous water. Although it is transparent, colorless (in most cases), hydrolat contains many useful substances. They call it distillate, this is due to the process of obtaining it. There is another name - hydrosol.

Hydrosol is obtained thanks to the work of a special unit - alambika (plant distiller). To get such water, you can use flowers, leaves, berries, fruits, roots. If water is extracted from the tender parts of the plant (flowers, leaves), then the steam distillation method is used:

  1. a perforated sheet or mesh is placed above the water, filled with plant material;
  2. the distiller heats up any source of heat from below (open fire, heating element);
  3. water boils, forming steam. It passes through the plants, capturing some of the volatile esters, useful plant components, then condenses and flows down the tube into the vessel.

The resulting liquid is the hydrolat. But using coarser material (for example, berries), the steam method will be ineffective. The water method for extracting distillate is relevant here:

  1. the necessary plants are initially placed in the water;
  2. heat it up, collect the condensate.

Hydrosols are used both in their original form and are added to medicinal and cosmetic products. Hydrolates are used more often for home cosmetics (cosmetic masks, ice, tonic). Plant distillate cannot be compared with the properties and capabilities of essential oils, as these are two different products.

An important place is occupied by the quality of raw materials. It is desirable that plants are grown away from industrial areas, highways, chemical dumps, etc.

Beneficial features

It is not in vain that hydrosols can often be found in personal care products (shampoos, gels, creams, mouthwashes), cosmetics, and medicines. This is all thanks to their unique properties:

  • hydrosols contain light esters, which, depending on the origin, can solve various cosmetic problems;
  • the water, which is the basis of the hydrolat, is completely purified from minerals and metals harmful to the skin, suitable for any type of skin, especially for sensitive;
  • a small amount of esters, as part of the distillate, will not oversaturate problem skin with fats, will not require rinsing;
  • hydrolats have a light texture, and the liquid itself at the same time has the maximum amount of usefulness that could only be taken from a plant.

The aroma of a quality hydrolate does not always match the aroma of an essential oil that is extracted from a similar plant. Natural floral or fruity notes should not be too cloying with a hint of flavoring. If this is the case, then the purchased hydrolate is of poor quality.

How to choose the hydrolat you need?

We are not always offered exactly the hydrosol that we want to receive. Indeed, in order to make any cosmetic product, only a high-quality distillate is needed. This one will contain not just an aromatic substance, but also active ingredients. To choose a quality product, you should follow this procedure:

  • Request a certificate of quality. It is this formality that will save you from a dubious purchase. Companies that have such a document a priori adhere to the technology for the production of hydrolat and you can be calm about the quality of the products.
  • Purchase the product only in specialized stores or pharmacy kiosks. In such places of purchase, all the documents for the goods are likely to be available, and the storage conditions will be observed. The same cannot be said about spontaneous markets.
  • See composition. They can write “hydrolat” on the bottle, and the composition is rich in essential oils. It shouldn't be like that.

You can make your own distillate. The distiller unit itself (alambik) has a cost ranging from low (for an aluminum apparatus) to higher (for a copper one). In this case, you can control the quality of plant materials.

To choose the best product for your skin, you should pay attention to the properties of the plant itself, from which it was obtained.

Composition, properties, purpose and methods of application

In fact, hydrosols are water-soluble components of plants, rich in antioxidants, vitamins and other benefits. I would like to dedicate this post to hydrolates that have been gaining popularity lately, to talk about their quality and production technology. Hydrosols are very beneficial for the skin. They gently cleanse the skin of impurities, stimulate cell renewal, refresh and even out the complexion. (carefully, a lot of letters!)

I often come across situations when fragrant water made from distilled water is called a hydrolate, or worse, they consider it to be.
As part of the post (since there are various terms in life), I propose to call hydrolates hydrolates, and prepared waters (that is, products that mimic natural ones) - fragrant. By the way, floral water is not yet a very accurate name and applicable to hydrolates, since not all water distillates are obtained from flowers.
The term “hydrolat” comes from the Latin words “hydro” (water) and “lat” (milk), because within a few minutes after distillation, the hydrolate is a slightly turbid liquid. The term hydrolate is used to describe the condensed vapor that has passed through the plant material.

Fragrant waters(or as they sometimes say “reconstituted”) is obtained not by steam distillation, but by mixing distilled water with one or more essential oils, and the oils used can be both natural and synthetic. And since the essential oil does not dissolve in water, the esters are first diluted in polysorbates, and already water-soluble polysorbates are added to distilled water to make the solution homogeneous. And, of course, the process of preparing such waters takes place without the use of a distiller. To extend the shelf life of fragrant water, alcohol and preservatives are added to it. Such water is significantly different from water prepared by steam distillation and does not have the same therapeutic properties. Once, on the run, she snatched such water from the Nikitsky Garden (the seller, of course, waved her mane and called her hydrolat), and examined the composition only at home. Well, what can I say, sadness ... This water does not bring me pleasure from using it, I feel deceived and adapted it exclusively for spraying on clay masks. Polysorbate, even in a small concentration, somehow does not want to be left on the face.

Hydrolats they are also obtained from essential oil and other plants by steam distillation, during which part of the water-soluble components of plants is absorbed and retained by water.
In addition to the components of essential oils, such water also contains other water-soluble components of plants that are not found in essential oils. Hydrolates contain about 0.2-0.5% (sometimes more) of the water-soluble components of plants, distributed in water. They may have properties similar to those of the essential oil obtained from the same plant, but less pronounced, but more often the properties of hydrolates are still different.
In general, the hydrolate production process is a by-product of the essential oil production process, but some plants, both containing essential oils and those not containing essential oils, are distilled only to produce hydrolates.

Distillation is carried out as follows: plant material is placed in a container of hot water or placed on a grid over a container of water. The container is heated to a high temperature, resulting in the essence of plant material in the form of steam. The steam is collected in a tube passing through the cooling units, where it takes on a liquid form and is drained into another container. The steam turns into a water distillate (hydrolat), and the essence of the plant into an essential oil.
On average, the yield of hydrosols is from 1 to 5 liters per kilogram of plant material and varies depending on the plant.
Naturally, there are certain criteria for determining the quality of hydrolates, however, we, as end users, are unlikely to be able to evaluate such parameters as the botanical species of the plant, the duration and pressure of distillation, etc., plus, it is also quite difficult to assess the quality of the hydrolate by smell , since a hydrolat will not necessarily smell the same as an essential oil obtained from the same plant, so the main selection criterion to focus on is the composition (checking the production date and expiration date is by default).

What to watch in the composition:
Hydrolates are either not preserved at all (since essential oils are excellent preservatives), or preserved with mild preservatives or a small amount of alcohol (up to 4%). The addition of a small amount of alcohol, of course, will not adversely affect the properties of the hydrolate, however, it can reduce the possibilities of its use, for example, it is no longer worth using lavender hydrolate for burns, and using cornflower for the sensitive area of \u200b\u200bthe eyes is also. And just the use of alcohol-containing products for cosmetic purposes for dry skin is unjustified, although oily skin is unlikely to be happy with alcohol.
Well, fragrances in the composition, of course, we also do not need!

For example:

We see that Bulgarian water is conserved. Wikipedia says that methylchloroisothiazolinone mixed with methylisothiazolinone (=commercial name Kathon CG) is often used in cosmetics and personal care products and has low toxicity at recommended concentrations for use + complies with environmental requirements. Of course, preservatives, on the one hand, are not good, on the other hand, in Bulgaria this water is sold at every turn in tiny tents along the entire coast, and without preservatives in the heat, it simply would not survive. In similar water, but from Bio Fresh, only damask rose distillate is indicated in the composition, but I don’t know how honest the manufacturer is and whether preservatives are present in it.
In chamomile water, we clearly see water and chamomile essential oil. Again, I don’t want to convict the manufacturer, but I suspect polysorbate in the composition (perhaps he is hiding behind the phrase “prepared water”) ...

In addition to the main difference in the method of manufacture, the waters also differ in their effect on the skin - the hydrolat acts on the skin very gently, and the fragrant water enriched with essential oil acts more aggressively and can cause irritation and tingling on sensitive skin.

Hydrolates are very sensitive to light, heat, and microbial contamination, so it is best to keep them in a dark glass bottle in a cool place, away from sources of heat and light. The shelf life of hydrolats varies depending on the composition. Opened hydrosols can be refrigerated for 2 to 6 months, and some up to a year. Therefore, it is more expedient to buy hydrolates in small volumes.

From ways of application I personally take hydrosols for myself only externally, by spraying (moreover, repeated use of several sprays during the day is more effective).
Some sources say that undiluted hydrolat is a good remedy for treating skin diseases such as dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis, cuts, wounds, but I have not tried it and I think that serious skin problems still need to be addressed with a dermatologist.
By the way, undiluted hydrolat may not be completely tolerant to the skin, therefore, in some cases it must be diluted with water.

However, there are nuances in the use of hydrosols! They should not be used immediately after cleansing the skin with soap products, since the hydrolate has an acidic PH, and the soap is alkaline, the skin may react with redness and burning.

Hydrolats, like the rest of the care, of course, need to be selected according to the needs of your skin. Having an acid-base balance different from water, their acidity can vary from weak (almost neutral) like lavender (5.6-5.9 pH) to strong like rock rose (2.9-3.1 pH). The pH level has a significant effect on the healing properties of the hydrolate, for example, Neroli hydrolate (with a high level of acidity) may not be suitable for sensitive and dry skin. Often in the description, the manufacturer indicates the type of skin that he recommends using this hydrosol, and this point must be taken into account.

Hydrosols by skin type:

About contraindications , I personally think that hydrolats, however, as well as essential oils, should not be used during pregnancy (but there are different opinions here), and plant hydrolats should also be avoided, for which you have some kind of contraindications or allergies.

Hydrolats are also called flower water, because they are most often made from flowers. But hydrolates from various medicinal herbs, some berries, etc. are also useful. And they are obtained by steam or hydrodistillation.

Some mistakenly think that a hydrolate is an essential oil dissolved in water. This is not true. Hydrolats contain not only essential oils. I think many of you have heard about rose water or used it - this is the real rose hydrosol, probably one of the most popular and versatile. That's what I tried first. It is suitable for all skin types - soothes, moisturizes, tones. How does it smell...

What are hydrosols used for?

  1. Instead of facial toner. You just need to moisten a damp cotton pad in the hydrolate and wipe your face (for example, after applying ubtan) - the hydrolate will moisturize the skin and narrow the pores.
  2. Hydrosol Facial Spray: You can spray the hydrosol onto your face multiple times a day to freshen up the color and add extra moisture to your face. I spray this water on my face before applying oil instead of regular water or mineral water. Do not spray on cosmetics!
  3. Two-phase facial cleanser (removes makeup and any impurities): combine 70% hydrolate and 30% base oil in a spray bottle. Before use, shake well, spray on the face, massage, remove with a warm, damp cotton pad.
  4. Spray for hair. Plants contain phytohormones that can make hair stronger and shinier, and accelerate their growth. After washing my hair, I often spray flower water on the roots, and a little along the entire length. Hydrolats smell amazingly like flowers - an added plus. This helps to get rid of the smell of apple cider vinegar, which I often rinse my hair with.
  5. Ice cubes - just freeze the hydrolat and wipe the face with the resulting cubes at the end of washing.
  6. Enrichment of homemade soap (use instead of water).
  7. You can dilute any face and hair masks with this remedy instead of plain water.
