IBF and WBA cruiserweight champion Gassiev and undefeated WBC/WBO champion Usyk will meet in a unification fight in the final of the World Boxing Super Series (WBSS), which will take place three months later on May 11 in Saudi Jeddah. Probably, Usyk does not have such a strong jaw as Dorticos to withstand Gassiev's blows. The Cuban turned out to be an incredibly resilient fighter and showed that he could withstand the blows of the Russian without damage. He lasted a full 11 rounds in the fight with Gassiev, which took place on Saturday evening in the Russian city of Adler.

Usyk will have to gain strength to defeat Gassiev, because his amateur fighting style will not help him. It will not help Usyk win rounds where the judges count points by the number of touches with the white ends of the gloves. Dorticos outflanked Gassiev in the first few rounds, but the Russian's strong shots allowed him to win the rounds, although the Cuban acted better and faster. At the same time, Gassiev was slowly wearing down Dorticos round after round with his powerful punches. By the 12th round, the Cuban was very tired, having received a large number of blows from the Russian athlete, and could no longer reflect them. Usyk took on Mairis Briedis on January 27, and was slightly underwhelmed for the first six rounds. He had the same problems in the 12th round. If Briedis did not get tired in rounds from 7 to 11, he would have defeated the Ukrainian.

Usyk moves well, and in order to counter his fast-paced boxing style, you need to land punches to the body. Gassiev will have to go on the attack on Usyk from the very beginning if he doesn't want this fighter to move around the ring in his amateur style of fighting. If Gassiev manages to deprive Usyk of his main advantages, which include extreme mobility, then he will be able to wear down his opponent, not giving him the opportunity to use his mobility. When moving, Usyk boxes much better than when he is stationary. We saw it in the fight with Briedis, when Usyk got tired in the 12th round and was punished for it. From the very beginning, Briedis skillfully worked with the corps against Usyk, but he did not manage to completely wear him out. It is possible that Gassiev will even be able to knock out Usyk, as he did with Wlodarczyk, if on May 11, already at the beginning of the fight, he manages to inflict several blows on him. A boxer who throws body punches like Gassiev is the worst thing that can happen to the fast-moving Usyk. Mobile fighters like Usyk have a hard time when they are fighting a man who delivers devastating blows to the body. Gassiev is the best of the best in this business, and he does not need great boxing skills, since he has such punching power. But I must say that he has boxing skills at least where. Experts clearly underestimate them.

Why is Gassiev such a formidable opponent for Usyk? The thing is that he can weaken it with blows to different parts of the body. Whenever Gassiev hits Usyk's body, the blows can be very painful. If Gassiev hits Usyk in the chin with a left hook, as he did with Dorticos, then the Ukrainian may switch off for a while. Gassiev's body shots are devastating. Dorticos managed to withstand such blows from the Russian, but he covered the middle part of the body well in front. Gassiev had to be content with blows to the sides, and Dorticos held these blows well. It is impossible to say for sure whether Usyk will withstand the power of Gassiev's blow when he reaches his body or head. Dorticos with his steel chin well withstood the power of the Russian.

Looking at how Gassiev butchered the 31-year-old Dorticos in the 12th round, it's hard to imagine that Usyk will be able to withstand such a hail of crushing blows to the head that a fighter from Russia can inflict. Until his last fight with Mairis Briedis, Usyk seemed unbeatable. Usyk almost lost that fight, and Briedis could well have gotten the better of him if he had moved a little better. In the first six rounds, Briedis took too fast pace, but was not ready to continue the same intense fight in the second half of the fight. 24-year-old Gassiev is a fighter of a different warehouse. He can handle the intense pace for 12 rounds without letting up, as happened with Briedis. The reason may be that Gassiev is nine years younger than Briedis. But it seems to me that Gassiev is just more capable of fighting relentlessly for 12 rounds. Gassiev is like a man who will be able to fight hard throughout his career without weakening. This is bad news for Usyk, and he will have to rely more on his boxing skills and dexterity than he did in his first two Super Series matches. Usyk cannot allow Gassiev to use his heavy artillery against him, as he did in the first two battles with Cuban Yunier Dorticos and Krzysztof Wlodarczyk. Gassiev's last three rivals - and these are Dorticos, Vlodarczyk and Denis Lebedev - received many heavy blows from him and lost to the Russian boxer. And by the way, they are very good fighters. And although Usyk recently confidently defeated Briedis, his record of 14 fights does not include three such names. Yes, Usyk got the better of Marco Hook, but that was a victory over a boxer who lost his previous fight to Briedis in 12 rounds by a decision of the judges.

Usyk is 31 years old and is the favorite in this fight, as in the previous two matches of the WBSS World Boxing Super Series against Mairis Briedis and Marco Hook. However, Gassiev has a more powerful punch than those two and the strength gives him a very good chance to break through the tight defense of Usyk's boxing prowess. It can be said that Gassiev has a "one hit" chance, and this seems to be a very accurate statement. And if on May 11 the Russian manages to deliver one of his heavy blows to Usyk's jaw, the advantages of the Ukrainian as a fighter will not matter. Much more important is how much Usyk is better than Gassiev in terms of boxing skills. If the Ukrainian receives a powerful enough blow from the Russian, it will no longer matter how much better he is than Gassiev. Usyk's jaw will fail him, just as Dorticos' jaw betrayed the Cuban in the 12th round when the fight was stopped. Dorticos in that round could not recover. The mustache is in the same position. If he gets hit hard enough by Gassiev, the May 11th fight will end quickly and abruptly.

Thanks to his prudent and accurate strikes, Gassiev will be a dangerous opponent for Usyk, who has missed blows more than once in the professional ring. Getting hit by a guy like Gassiev is not good. If we talk about the tenacity of Usyk, then you can’t call him a superman. I do not think that his chin is stronger than that of Dorticos or Denis Lebedev. These guys got such monstrous blows from Gassiev, which they have not seen in their entire career. And if Usyk gets one of these strong blows, the referee will probably have to start the countdown.

If the Wiske-Gassiev match lasts all 12 rounds, like the fight between Usyk and Briedis, then the judges will have to decide on points who is better: Usyk with more numerous punches, or Gassiev, who has fewer punches, but they are more powerful and cleaner. Of course, Gassiev will have to inflict more than three heavy blows per round on the Ukrainian to win the rounds. He will have significantly more work than in the fight with Dorticos to defeat Usyk in rounds. If Usyk can resist Gassiev's pressure (and I suspect he can), then the Russian boxer will need to land enough heavy punches if he wants to stand a chance of winning.

It is quite possible that Usyk will use more defensive tactics in the battle with Gassiev than in the match with Briedis. In the duel with Mairis, he was less mobile than in the fight with Marco Hook. Boxing with Hook, the Ukrainian moved around the ring, as in the match with Tabiso Mchunu. A Ukrainian can choose defensive tactics in order to deprive Gassiev of the opportunity to deliver his deadly blows to the body and head. And this means that if Gassiev intends to hit hard and powerfully, he will have to quickly move around the ring, choosing the moments for his punches. And he will also have to deliver sharp blows from the side in order to prevent Usyk from running around the ring. Usyk doesn't like getting hit to the body on the move. It is difficult to withstand such a blow when you move at a gallop, as Usyk likes to do.

The World Boxing Super Series (aka "M. Ali Prize Tournament") continues to deliver. Strictly speaking, neither the fight in Riga a week ago, nor today's battle in Sochi are up to the title of the best, and it's only the beginning of February in the yard ... But all this is subjective, and after two magnificent weekends I don't want to be strict. WBSS set a great pace for 2018, and in May it will at least support it.

The fight on May 11th in Jeddah for all significant titles in boxing (let's omit the IBO, without losing anything) can be blocked in fact by only one fight, but if the first date is clogged with red nails in the calendar, then the second was, is and will be under question at least until the summer. If Joshua and Wilder don't clash... perhaps there won't be a choice.

What will the fight in Jeddah be like? There are many options, but it is worth highlighting a few of its most likely features.

Rates on Gassiev will grow

Murat started the tournament as one of several contenders for the final, but no more. At the same time, Usyk was listed as the favorite of the tournament even before it started. However, then the situation began to change.

Usyk had a great fight with Hook, but spent a little more time on it than required. The duel with Mairis Briedis came out quite close, although, of course, not as close as the final score could indicate.

At the same time, Murat bombed Krzysztof Wloadrczyk in just three rounds, and then - "on the flag" - was able to stop the very strong Dorticos. In the last fight, the super champion from Ossetia showed outstanding tactical skills in addition to a powerful shot and a good hold.

Usyk is still the favorite, but the gap is shrinking very quickly. No one will be surprised if on the day of the fight Murat is already ahead of Alexander in terms of rates: Gassiev is growing, and at the same time very quickly.

There will be no knockout

In four hands and in four fights, Usyk and Gassiev won three knockout victories for two. But there is something wrong with these statistics.

Firstly, Usyk, despite winning by knockout in the fight with Hook, could not put the odious Marco on the floor. Gassiev, of course, won his victories with much more obvious knockouts, but there are nuances.

Nuance #1 : Krzysztof Wlodarczyk lost a lot after the fight with Grigory Drozd and a year and a half break (this was especially noticeable in his hardest victories over Leon Hart and Noel Gevor), he exhausted the strength limit and just begged for a knockout.

Nuance #2 : Usyk is not Dorticos, who was throwing clean "bombs" and not grimacing. The tendril will not allow you to hit yourself so often, and he holds just as well or a little worse.

Alldecided in the early rounds

The last two fights have clearly shown that both Usyk and Gassiev perfectly master the art of subordinating opponents to their will in the later rounds. Briedis and Dorticos masterfully fell into the traps set for them, being completely outplayed in the endings.

Taking into account what was said above about knockouts and understanding the well-known tactical flexibility of boxers, a lot will depend on the first rounds of the fight.

Oleksandr Usyk is known to harness for a long time: even despite a series of knockouts on the way to the fight with Krzysztof Głowacki, he almost never won early. In fights with Glovatsky and especially Hook and Briedis, the Ukrainian started slowly, adjusting to his opponent. In the fight with the clumsy and uncomfortable little Tabiso Mchuna, Usyk was able to gain momentum only by the second half of the fight.

Conversely, Gassiev can and knows how to start quickly. Confirmation of this is a great knockout against Jordan Schimmel and a quick extermination of the same Wlodarczyk. From whether Gassiev can suppress Usyk at the beginning of the fight, its end will depend significantly. Even if the fight goes the whole distance.

The key to success is body work

Here the situation is the same as in the case of the ability to start quickly. Both fighters are known for their skills in handling the heads of their unfortunate opponents. This is clear and understandable. What is not clear is how they will work on the torso.

And it is here that Gassiev's advantage can manifest itself, if it exists at least in certain aspects. Murat did not just knock out the Pole Wlodarczyk; he significantly slowed down the Cuban Dorticos with just such blows. Usyk also knows how to hit the body, but still he is not so good in this regard.

Speed is known to kill. And the speed itself can be killed by blows to the body.

There will be no provocation

And, first of all, thanks to the position of the boxers themselves. Oleksandr Usyk did the work that other foreign ministers would have called for, not just by arriving in a neighboring country at a difficult moment in relations between the two countries, but by showing exactly how sports should be left out of politics. And I'm sure Murat Gassiev will support this example.

The fight itself should and will become a real boxing feast for fans with a minimum of clinches, no blows to the back of the head and all the other similar delights. It will be just a boxing match. The best in 2018.

The Muhammad Ali Cup Super Series was invented a few years ago, this is a new phenomenon in the world of boxing. Never before have the various boxing versions of the WBA, WBC, IBF agreed to hold unified fights between champions for a single title. The time has come.

Cossack prowess and Ossetian steel will converge in the ring, two boxers whose boxing is completely different from each other. Usyk is a classic school of amateur boxing, and the best part of it, left in independent Ukraine as a gift from the Soviet Union, which it hates. Alexander became an Olympic champion, this is the highest step in the development of an amateur boxing career.

What is Usyk's main style? Control the fight, determine the development of the situation in the ring, work constantly with a jab, create attacks and then methodically execute them. All as taught. amateur school.

Gassiev is a passion, but limited, in those moments and periods when it is needed. Murat doesn't have a big amateur career like Alexander has. He quickly turned pro and quickly became one of the best heavyweight boxers. Its main difference is the force of impact and sharpness. Usyk will dance in the ring, as taught in amateur boxing, and Gassiev will hit hard with his punches, like Alanian steel in the 13th century.

The experts were divided in their assessments of who will win. The one who breathes in the back of this pair, the former heavyweight champion Denis Lebedev, Gassiev beat him at the time, will be rooting for Usyk.

The famous rapper "Basta", who has been actively into boxing for the last year, puts on Gassiev and will support him.

Murat Gassiev, who has been living in recent years in Chelyabinsk, who, as he himself says, has long ago become a Uralian, is Orthodox, and Alexander Usik, who comes from Crimea, with Christian convictions, they say about such people in the West - the classic orthodox. Therefore, whoever wins in this pair, the ideas of the Russian world will be fully respected.

We have repeatedly written about Oleksandr Usyk - he is not only one of the main world boxing stars now, he is also a serious irritant inside Ukraine, since he still has not recognized the “annexation of Crimea”, travels to Simferopol and does not call Russians “occupiers”.

For such a position, many radicals cannot forgive him, and, perhaps, in Kyiv and other places today they will not support their boxer, since, according to their logic of events, he “sold out to Muscovites”.

Recall that initially the final of the super series was to be held in Saudi Arabia, but due to various postponements, it was eventually decided to hold the fight in Moscow, and the fact that Usyk went to the “capital of Mordor” to fight for the title of the best heavyweight boxer, many in Kyiv annoying.

The Ukrainian boxer behaves very delicately and accurately. Some say that in the future he will go into politics, as did his older comrades, the Klitschko brothers. Therefore, our viewers need to be more careful. Businessman Donald Trump also came to Russia, and no one could have thought that after some time he would become the President of the United States. At least, our President Vladimir Putin spoke about this at the summit in Helsinki, so maybe the future President of Ukraine came to us on July 21, 2018, but we don’t know this yet?

left no chance for Murat Gassiev. If even in the first few rounds the Russian was on an equal footing, then he had no chance of success further.

Media reports about it.

There was only hope for a lucky punch, but Alexander did everything so that the opponent could not throw even one powerful blow.

Usyk cut corners very competently, went behind Gassiev's front leg, and also constantly moved. Murat, against the background of Ukrainskaya, looked worthwhile: he did not succeed in attack, so Usyk threw his punches all the time.

There was no intrigue in the last rounds: Alexander calmly slowed down, but still remained much faster than his opponent, thanks to which he easily brought the matter to victory.

A devastating victory on points - 120:110, 119:109 and 119:109 Alexander Usik became the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world, beating Murat Gassiev in Moscow.

Analysis of the battle

Anatoly Lomachenko - the secret of success

As Usyk himself said, in recent battles he "stood still." Breaking up with coach Sergei Vatamanyuk looked like an obvious decision, but it still seemed strange that Alexander decided to leave the coach before an important career fight.

But, as it turned out before the start of the fight, Usyk had a backup plan. Anatoly Lomachenko, the father and coach of Vasily Lomachenko, turned out to be in the corner of the Ukrainian. This person probably won the duel. Usyk had a wonderful 12 rounds, only occasionally letting his opponent throw some punches.

Such a powerful performance from the Ukrainian has not been for a long time: he mocked his opponent. The footwork, the constant streaks, the speed - it was all really powerful. Oleksandr Usyk introduced himself as heavyweight Vasily Lomachenko in the final. It is not surprising that all this happened at the moment when Anatoly Lomachenko appeared in the corner of the Ukrainian.

Gassiev - a bag? In this fight yes

Lucky punch, of course, has not been canceled by anyone, but betting on it cannot be a strategy in the final of the World Boxing Super Series. It sounds funny.

Oleksandr Usyk is the best in heavyweight

Usyk turned pro with a specific goal: to unify the belts and become the best in history. It took Alexander 15 fights to turn the goal into reality. The Ukrainian collected all the heavyweight belts, became the absolute champion and entered his name in history.

What's next for him? Likely transition to heavyweight. Perhaps a rematch against Mairis Briedis would be interesting. Does it make sense to box again with Gassiev? I think no. This fight answered all questions.
