The State Institute of Art Studies is a leading Russian center in the field of comprehensive study of domestic and foreign art. The Institute was established in 1944 by decision of the Presidium of the USSR Academy of Sciences. Since 1962, the Institute of Art Studies came under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Culture of the USSR. Among its founders are prominent figures of Russian culture Igor Grabar, Sergei Eisenstein, Boris Asafiev, Viktor Lazarev, Alexey Dzhivelegov. Today, the Institute staff is engaged in the implementation of fundamental projects on the history of European and Russian art, including the publication of a 22-volume History of Russian Art. Among the main activities of the institute are the study of architectural monuments and monumental art located on the territory of the Russian Federation, sociological research in the field of culture and art, expert evaluation of cultural heritage and works of contemporary art. On the basis of the Institute there are the Scientific Council for Art Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences and 4 dissertation councils for fine, theatrical and musical art, aesthetics and cultural studies. The Institute conducts training of scientific personnel in graduate school, as well as through the system of competition and scientific internships.

The State Institute of Art Studies publishes about 40 books a year: monographs, collective works, publications of documents on the history of art, conference proceedings, etc.

The Institute publishes four peer-reviewed scientific journals on art criticism and cultural studies, of which 2 are printed - "Art Studies" and "Theater Issues" and 2 electronic - "The Art of Music: Theory and History" and "Artistic Culture".
